THE WWII ELGiN MILITARY A-11 *HACKING SWEEP SECONDS 539 WATCH WITH 15 JEWELS  WAS MADE FROM 1940 TO 1945 FOR THE ARMY AIR CORPS AND WAS CONSIDERED A PILOT'S WATCH.

THIS MODEL WAS PRODUCED IN 1943 AND IS ONE OF THE FIRST ELGIN MOVEMENTS WITH BOTH SWEEP SECONDS AND A *HACKING FEATURE. IT FEATURED CLEAN PARKERIZED DOUBLE CASE; ILLUMINATED HANDS; DOUBLE THICKNESS ORIGINAL RUBBER SEALED CRYSTAL AND A GILDED HACKING SWEEP SECONDS ELGIN MILITARY 539.

*HACKING [STOPPING THE SECOND HAND] IS ACCOMPLISHED WHEN THE CROWN IS PULLED AND A MECHANISM STOPS THE BALANCE IN ORDER TO SYNCHRONIZE THE WATCH TO A KNOWN TIME SOURCE,
USUALLY THE SQUADRON COMMANDERS TIME PIECE.

IMG_6736.JPG (120483 bytes)

WITH ORIGINAL MINTY DIAL, ILLUMINATED LEAF HANDS, BLACK & ILLUMINATED SWEEP SECOND HAND, TOTALLY OVERHAULED ORIGINAL MOVEMENT AND THE ORIGINAL THICK CRYSTAL, THIS MODEL  HAPPENS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST ELGIN PRODUCED.

RE-ILLUMINATED
WITH
AF-Luminova

IMG_6737.JPG (124179 bytes)

The dial is black, with very high visibility white-on-black numbers
and graduations the hands were designed for high visibility, with a
clearly smaller and wider hour hand a longer, slimmer minutes hand,
and a long and thin constant width central sweep seconds hand tail.

CASE IS AWESOME
AND
IN EXCELLENT CONDITION
BECAUSE IT WAS
PARKERIZED

*PARKERIZED STEEL WATERPROOF CASE

*Parkerizing, bonderizing, phosphating, or phosphatizing is a method of protecting a steel surface from corrosion and increasing its resistance to wear through the application of an electrochemical phosphate conversion coating. .

IMG_6743.JPG (152401 bytes)

IMG_6879.JPG (157938 bytes)

Parkerizing was started in England and continued by the Parker family in the United States. The terms Parkerizing, Parkerize, and Parkerized are all technically registered U.S. trademarks of Henkel Adhesives Technologies.

NOTE CROWN WAS NOT SHINY. BUT AN APPRENTICE DECISED TO POLISH IT... LOL. EVENTUALLY IT WILL LOST
IT'S SHINE...

IMG_6739.JPG (116568 bytes)

The Parkerizing process was first used on a large scale in the manufacture of firearms for the United States military during World War II.

IT IS AWESOME AND TWICE AS THICK AS
THE REPLACEMENT

IMG_6887.JPG (97447 bytes)

IMG_6702.JPG (126351 bytes)

YOU CAN SEE WHY WE CHOSE TO KEEP THIS ORIGINAL
ELGIN A-11 CRYSTAL; IT IS THE THICKEST
CRYSTAL ONE CAN FIND.

WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT IS NOT A LEDGE.
IT IS THE ACTUAL THICKNESS OF THE CRYSTAL
A RUBBER SEAL IS PLACED IN THE CASE AND THE
CRYSTAL IS SNAPPED IN AND THEN WE ADDED UV CEMENT
AND CURED IT UDER A 165 WATT UV LIGHT SYSTEM

STYLE G-18 WITH FULL KEEPERS

BALLISTIC NYLON IS TWICE AS STRONG AS
THE NATO STRAPS THAT ARE NORMALLY SOLD
WE ONLY GET THEM IN TWO COLORS

 IMG_6665.JPG (120721 bytes)

I HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS CASE IS AWESOME
THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES & MATERIALS USED IN THE A-11 CASE
THOSE PRODUCED IN 1944-1945 HAD CASES OF LESS QUALITY

IN FACT, MOST A-11 CASES ARE THIN WALLED CHROME PLATED AFFAIRS
THAT IS FACT, JUST LOOK AT THE PICS OF OUR STOCKED CASES BELOW

THIS IS PARKERIZED STEEL CASE IS HEAVY AND LARGERS
THAN  MOST NORMALLY OFFERED  BY US.

ORIGINAL 1943 WAR MODIFIED Elgin 539 WITH
SWEEP SECONDS & HACK IN MINT CONDITION

SWEEP-HACKING.jpg (40663 bytes)

NOTICE THE BIG SWEEP WHEEL THAT ALLOWS A CENTER SWEEP SECONDS. THIS   WAS THE FIRST A-11 1783 WITH CENTER SWEEP PLUS HACKING. This 1943 transformation began with  an Elgin movement with sub-seconds to one with a central sweep second. It was accomplished by adding a new pinion bridge that attached to the mainspring bridge. A wheel was added [note the gold plated brass wheel with round large brass cap] that was powered by the seconds pinion gear [designed to operate a sub-sconds dial], this wheel runs from sub-second to wheel to center pinion wheel under the pinion bridge to second hand; thus sweeping seconds with hacking.

I READ IN SOME FORUM THAT US PILOTS FLEW DAY TIME RAIDS AND DID NOT REQUIRE ILLUMINATION. AND BY THE TIME THEY REALIZED THAT THEY WOULD BE BOBMING AT NIGHT, THEY COULD NOT CHANGE PRODUCTION. WELL, THIS A-11 HAD RADIUM APPLIED TO THE HANDS AND THE SECONDS HAND. WHICH WE REMOVED AND UTILIZED AF-LUMINOVA
