HELBROS
WWII HISTORY

helbros2.jpg (45398 bytes)

In 1913, when only the relatively well-to-do could afford a timepiece, Helbros was created by the Helbein Brothers. The middle class Swiss German watchmakers goal was to manufacture quality timepieces affordable to the working public.

IMG_9066.JPG (143613 bytes)
[1917 W.W.I RED CROSS MILITARY WATCH]

During WWI, Helbros created their first time pieces. Watches created with themes can be discovered to day. Such as Nurses watches with red Cross under the "12" position, These were mainly square trench type watches.

By the 20's and 30's, Helbros was a household name.

With the outbreak of WWII,   Helbros supplying watches to American Forces and was an extreme promoter of the United States War Bond effort. In fact, wood watch boxes with "BUY U.S. WAR BONDS AND STAMPS [ like above] can be discover/found frequently.

Helbros was one of the first watch companies to utilize radio as a means of exposure. On Sunday, July 16, 1944, Quick as a Flash, a 30-minute radio quiz program which featured drama segments with guest actors from radio detective shows, debuted over the Mutual Network.

Created by director Richard Lewis and emcee Ken Roberts, Quick as a Flash was Sponsored by the Helbros Watch Company.

Quick as a Flash was produced by Lewis and Bernard J. Prockter with scripts by Gene Wang. Music was by Ray Bloch and the Helbros Orchestra. Six contestants from the studio audience competed for cash and other prizes. Clues were presented in the form of dramatic sketches covering such subjects as current events, movies, books and historical situations. With a buzzer, a contestant could interrupt at any time to submit an answer.

PLEASE READ THE
FOLLOWING FACT CHECK

MOST CHRONOGRAPHS IN DECENT SHAPE REQUIRING "A LITTLE" WORK ON EBAY START OUT LIKE THIS ONE: COST FACTOR = $200.00 TO BUY.

THEN YOU KNOW IT WILL TAKE 8 HOURS WORK NO MATTER IF YOU PERFORM JUST THE BASICS TO A GREAT RESTORATION.

YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TO AT LEAST SERVICE THE MOVEMENT --SOMETIMES OVERHAUL: COST FACTOR 100.00 MIN -CLEANERS -ULTRASOINIC-4 PART CLEANER SOLUTIONS, OILS - LUBES SEALERS + NEW MAINSPRING +

NOTE A SERVICE ON A VALJOUX CHRONOGRAPH AT YOUR LOCAL JEWELER IS 350.00.

THEN YOU HAVE COSMETICS A CASE LIKE THIS HAS TO BE GENTLY WORKED. IT IS CHROMED:COST FACTOR SAY $25.00 -ROUGH-ELECTRICITY-HEATED ELECTRO CLEANING-ULTRASONIC CLEANING-SPRAYS .

THEN YOU HAVE NEW CRYSTAL: COST FACTOR SAY $15.00.

THEN YOU HAVE  STRAP AND DEPLOYMENT: COST FACTOR SAY 8 TO $50.00 AVERAGE.

AND. IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES, WHAT BEGINS AS A SIMPLE "PUSHER" TURNS INTO A 3 MONTH SEARCH AND SEEK AND CUSTOMIZE: COST FACTOR FROM OTTO FREI ONE SET OF PUSHERS $90.00

THEN YOU HAVE RE-ILLUMINATION FEES RIGHT?: 100.00 AVERAGE THIS IS SEPARATE FROM THE LABOR BELOW

LABOR FEES WOULD BE 350.00 JUST TO SERVICE THE MOVEMENT. BUT I WILL SAY, TO DO ALL THE WORK:  350.00

IMG_3231.JPG (127972 bytes)

I INVESTED IN THIS AWESOME
HELBROS BECAUSE THEY ARE
AWESOME
"NEEDS  PUSHER"
TO GET A PUSHER WAS IMPOSSIBLE
NOT EVEN THE BORELS OR THE FREIS' HAD ONE
4 MONTHS AND NOTHING
THEN I ORDERED A SET THAT WERE
TOO LONG AND 1/2 MM WIDER
I TAPPED AND DIED THIS BEAUTY
AND
INSTALLED THESE BLACK CAPPED PUSHERS
BUT LOOK HOW LONG THE STEMS ARE!

IMG_3236.JPG (101610 bytes)

I ENLARGED THE THREADED HOLES
TO FIT THE 2.5mm CASE TUBES AND UTILIZE
RED LOCKTIGHT TO SEAL THEM
SEMI-PERMANENTLY INTO THE CASE

IMG_3234.JPG (139020 bytes)

NOTE: THE PINS ARE TOO LONG & ARE SLOTED
THE PINS ARE SCREWED INTO THE CAPS
THE BLACK COATED STEEL CAPS ARE SERRATED
AND THE TUBE TOPS HAVE MATCHING SERRATIONS
THE STEMS MUST SCREW INTO THE CAPS
PULLING THEM DOWN OVER THE TUBES
WHERE THEY MESH AS THEY ARE TIGHTENED
YOU CANNOT TURN THE PUSHER CAPS

IMG_3239.JPG (113286 bytes)

THE PINS  MUST BE FLUSH TO THE CASE
INTERIOR + PLUS 1MM, SO IT IS TIME TO SHORTEN
I BEGIN WITH A SQUARE NOSE JEWELERS PLIERS

IMG_3240.JPG (148535 bytes)

I THEN UTILIZE A FLEX SHAFT LOADED
WITH A  SANDING DISC

IMG_3241.JPG (139831 bytes)

THE BLUS "DISH" HAS OIL IN IT TO COOL THE PINS

IMG_3237.JPG (172434 bytes)

HERE THE PIN TO LEFT IS AT THE CORRECT LENGTH
THE ONE ON RIGHT REQUIRES MORE WORK

IMG_3242.JPG (170503 bytes)

THE PUSHER ON LEFT IS AN ORIGINAL
WITH SLOTTED PINS SEATED CORRECTLY
I HAVE TO DO THE SAME WITH THE NEW PUSHERS

IMG_3247.JPG (120274 bytes)

NOW I HAVE TO SLOT STAINLESS STEEL PINS SO THEY
CAN BE SCREWED INTO THE TUBE PUSHER CAPS
SO I LOAD A DRILL INTO THE FLEX SHAFT TO DRILL A HOLE
INTO A WOOD BENCH PIN TO HOLD THE PINS WHILE I SAW
SCREWDRIVER SLOTS INTO THE PUSHER PINS

IMG_3248.JPG (110575 bytes)

DRILLING THE RIGHT SIDE 1 X 4 X 16 INCH SLIDING
A BENCH PIN. NOTICE ALL THE HOLES AND CRATERS
BEING RIGHT HANDS IS DEADLY TO
THE RIGHT SIDE FLAT BENCH PIN LOL..

IMG_3250.JPG (147816 bytes)

ONE OF THE PUSHERS NOW EMBEDDED INTO PIN

IMG_3245.JPG (134858 bytes)

I LOAD UP A BLADE INTO
THE JEWELERS SAW

IMG_3251.JPG (146383 bytes)

I THEN PERFORM THE DIFFICULT TASK
OF SAWING SCREW DRIVE SLOTS.

IMG_3256.JPG (136680 bytes)

READY TO INSTALL

IMG_3259.JPG (109797 bytes)

PINS

IMG_3257.JPG (119170 bytes)

HERE ARE TUBE SPRINGS
SEALS ARE ALREADY IN THE TUBE
WITH
WASHERS

IMG_3265.JPG (102190 bytes)

THERE IS A STEEL WASHER VISIBLE WITH
A BLACK RUBBER ROUND "O" RING SEAL
THE STEMS COME THROUGH THE HOLE
AND THE WASHER IS NOW LOADED AROUND THE STEM.

IMG_3260.JPG (144330 bytes)

WHEN THE SPRING IS LOADED, IT SEATS ON TOP OF
THE WASHER PUSHING THE RUBBER TIGHTLY AROUND
THE PIN AND TUBE WALL

IMG_3266.JPG (122652 bytes)

THE PINS WERE SCREWED INTO THE CAP COVERS

IMG_3267.JPG (142065 bytes)

THIS IS AN ORIGINAL DIAL
THE MAR ABOVE THE #6 IS JUST A FINGER PRINT
IT WILL BE CLEANED LATER

IMG_3269.JPG (146736 bytes)
