AAA-DUROWE-LANCO-PAGE-D202-GERMAN-WATCH.jpg (6990 bytes)

Erich Lacher was the son of Frieda Lacher, co-founder of the German watch maker Lacher & Co ("LACO"*). In 1933 he founded the company DUROWE as an entity that would build watch movements in Germany for the German watch making industry, which had been forced to utilize movements made in Switzerland. Through out the 1930s, DUROWE built movements for the commercial trade and for German companies supplying the military. By 1939,  DUROWE was producing 30,000 movements. During WWII , DUROWE manufactured the famous D-5 chronometer-grade movements used in the LACO** Beobachtungsuhren (B-Uhr) pilots watches commissioned by the German government for use by the Luftwaffe. Durowe produced the D202 movement that was utilized in 30% of German military watches including PAGE, STOWA, and other well known 1930/1940' Period German watch producers.

THE WWII ERA GERMAN
PAGE MILITARY WATCH

I KNOW MOST "EXPERTS" WILL AGREE WITH ME -- EVEN IF THEY HAVE NOT RESTORED 900 TO 1500 VINTAGE WATCHES A YEAR -- THAT MANY AWESOME GERMAN TIME PIECES CAN BE FOUND WITHOUT GERMAN WAR, COMPANY, REGIMENTAL, COMMAND OR  NA-SI EMBLEMS OR MARKINGS.

GERMAN TROOPS, LIKE AMERICAN TROOPS, WERE NOT GIVEN A WRIST OR POCKET WATCHES AS PART OF THEIR GEAR. YET MILLIONS SERVED WITH WATCHES  THEY OWNED.  JUST LIKE AMERICANS. IF THEY OWNED A WATCH, THAT WATCH IS WHAT THEY WORE. BUT IF A SOLDIER WANTED TO BUY A WATCH, WHAT WAS AVAILABLE?

YOU CAN FIND WATCHES LIKE STOWA OR PAGE, TO NAME TWO, THAT WERE PRODUCED AND EQUIPPED WITH THE GERMAN SOLDIER IN MIND. A WATCH WAS AN IMPORTANT PART OF ANY SOLDIERS BELONGINGS; IN MANY CASES THE MOST IMPORTANT BESIDES HIS GUN. IT WAS ALSO VALUABLE. ESPECIALLY COMING OFF WWI AND THE DEPRESSION. SO WATCHES MADE AND EQUIPPED WITH MILITARY MOVEMENTS PURCHASED IN THE 1930'S WERE KEPT AND UTILIZED  AFTER WAR BROKE OUT IN THE 1940'S.

WHEN LOOKING FOR A WATCH, WE LOOK FOR THE CORRECT DETAILS. WHILE MANY GERMAN MILITARY WRIST WATCHES HAD SCREW DOWN CASE BACKS, THE FACT IS MILITARY WATCHES CAME WITH BOTH SNAP AND SCREW DOWN CASE BACKS. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE PRODUCTION DATE IS EXAMINED.

PRIOR TO THE OUTBREAK OF WWII, THERE WAS AN OFFICIAL GERMAN MILITARY AND A SECRET UNDERGROUND GERMAN MILITARY. THE GERMAN COMMAND HAD DIFFERENT CIVIC GROUPS THAT WERE ACTUALLY MILITARY.   THERE WERE THE BROWN SHIRTS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS THAT WOULD EVENTUALLY BECOME OFFICIAL GERMAN SOLDIERS.

MOST WATCHES PRODUCED IN GERMANY FOR THE AVERAGE SOLDIER IN 1930'S HAD SNAP BACK CASES, WIRE LUGS, BLACK DIALS, WHITE MARKERS AND NUMERALS, SOME WERE FULLY RADIUM  ILLUMINATED, SOME WERE PARTIAL ILLUMINATED, SOME HAD NO ILLUMINATION. THEY HAD CHROME OVER BASE CASES WITH CRYSTALS MADE OF CELLULOID/PLASTIC/CORN MATERIALS, THEY HAD SUB-SECONDS --WHICH PERSISTED EVEN WHEN CENTER SWEEPS TOOK OVER DUE TO THE EXISTING IN COUNTRY MOVEMENT PRODUCTION. [MOST STEEL CASED WATCHES WERE FROM THE SWISS].

SOLDIERS AND INDIVIDUALS WHO WOULD BECOME SOLDIERS PURCHASED THEM. HEY CONTINUED TO PURCHASE WATCHES MADE IN GERMANY FOR ALL OBVIOUS REASONS. AFTER THE WAR, THE ALLIES DESTROYED EVERYTHING GERMAN THEY GOT THEIR HANDS ON THAT THEY DID NOT WANT OR NEED. INCLUDING WATCHES. MANY OTHERS DISAPPEARED INTO THE RUSSIAN NATION. THUS, WHAT WAS NOT KEPT WAS DESTROYED. MILLIONS OF WATCHES WERE LOST DURING AND AFTER THE WAR.

THIS PAGE IS AN EXAMPLE OF A WATCH MADE FOR THE SOLDIER. IT'S NAME, MATERIAL MAKE-UP, LOOK, AND DIAL MARKEUP IS, WITHOUT A DOUBT,  A LIVING EXAMPLE OF 40% OF ALL GERMAN MILITARY WATCHES. THIS PAGE WAS DESIGNED AND EQUIPPED FOR THE SALE TO GERMAN MILITARY PERSONAL.

THE GERMAN MILITARY WATCH CAME IN MANY FLAVORS,
YET WE WILL DISCOVER CERTAIN CRITERIA THAT CAN
BE FOUND ON MOST TROOP WATCHES PRODUCED IN GERMANY.

THIS EXCELLENT CONDITION CASE
IS CHROME OVER BASE
WITH STEEL BACK

DUE TO 1930' MATERIAL SCARCITY
&
THE STEEL REQUIREMENTS
OF THE GERMAN MILITARY

GERMAN WATCH MAKERS WORKED MAINLY
IN CHROME PLATED BASE METAL
WITH STEEL UTILIZED ONLY FOR CASE BACKS

[UNDERGROUND GERMAN WAR PRODUCTION BEGAN LONG BEFORE THE WAR]

IMG_3662.JPG (141706 bytes)

NEW CRYSTAL

GERMAN TECHNOLOGY WAS
HAND IN HAND WITH THAT OF THE US
AND, IN SOME CASES, MORE ADVANCED
THESE WATCHES UTILIZED PLASTIC CRYSTALS
DEPENDING ON THE YEAR
THEY COULD BE COMPOSED
OF A VARIETY OF
CHEMICALS/PRODUCTS

IMG_3651.JPG (128578 bytes)

WIRE LUGS

EARLY [1930-1939] GERMAN MILITARY WATCHES
SHOW MORE USE OF THE WIRE LUG

WHY USE WIRE LUGS WHEN SPRING BARS WERE IN USE

SPRING BARS REQUIRED A SPECIAL MADE STRAP
WIRE LUGS UTILIZED A SIMPLE
STRAIGHT CUT LEATHER STRAP

AND

WIRE LUGS WERE MORE SECURE
IF ONE SIDE BROKE
THE WATCH WOULD STILL
REMAIN WITH THE SOLDIER
