JAPANESE
MILITARY WATCH BOX
1903 THROUGH 1920
JAPANESE RUSSIAN WAR
WORLD WAR ONE

COVERS
IN 35 YEARS

THE JAPANESE WENT FROM LEARNING HOW TO FIRE A CANON IN 1870 TO DEFEATING THE RUSSIAM IMPERIAL ARMY AND NAVY IN 1905 UTILIZING ARMS, ARTILLERY, SHIPS AND MORE THEY BUILT THEM SELVES.

DURING THIS TIME, JAPAN WAS A SPONGE  --ABSORBING THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE DAY AND THEN BUILDING EVERY THING FROM WATCHES TO BATTLESHIPS THAT WERE BETTER THAN THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE WEST.

DURING THIS PERIOD, JAPAN FORMED A RED CROSS, BECAME A SUPPLIER OF ARMS AND GOODS TO THE WORLD, AND, TO THE AMAZEMENT AND WORRY OF THE WESTERN WORLD, BECAME A COLONIAL POWER IN WHAT SEEMED TO BE AN OVER NIGHT ACCOMPLISHMENT.

I WILL SAY THAT THIS MILITARY WATCH BOX IS BETTER THAN THE WWII  BOXES WE HAVE ASSEMBLED. THE ITEMS ARE RARER AND REPRESENT THE PART AND PORTION OF JAPANESE HISTORY THAT WAS FORGOTTEN WHEN THE DEPRESSION HIT AND THE IMPERIAL FORCES TOOK OVER PRIOR TO WWII.

SO TAKE YOUR TIME AND VIEW THE ITEMS AND HAT THEY REPRESENT!

JAPAN 1903 THROUGH 1920

Russo-Japanese War
&
WWI

The Russo-Japanese War (8 February 1904 √Ę‚‚¨‚€œ 5 September 1905) was
"the first great war of the 20th century."

It was the rival imperial ambitions as well as the needs of both the
Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan that caused the war for
dominance of Manchuria and Korea.

The Russians sought a warm water port on the Pacific Ocean
for their navy as well as for maritime trade, while they had
one in Vladivostok, it was only operational during the summer season.

Port Arthur was the gem. It was operational all year. Thus the major
theaters of operations were Southern Manchuria, specifically the area
around the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden; and the seas around
Korea, Japan, and the Yellow Sea..

From the end of the First Sino-Japanese War and 1903,
negotiations between Russia and Japan had proved impractical.

After discussions broke down in 1904, Japan chose war by attacking
the Russian eastern fleet at Port Arthur, a naval base in the
Liaotung province leased to Russia by China.

The war was brutal, but the Japanese would defeat the Russians
in a final series of battles on land and at sea.

The resulting Japanese military victory over the Russian forces
arrayed against them were unexpected by world observers.

Over time, the consequences of these battles would transform the
balance of power in East Asia, resulting in Japan's dominant entry
onto the world stage.

SEIKOSHA WATCH HISTORY

Kintaro Hattori

  • 881 -- Kintaro Hattori opens the watch and jewelry shop "K. Hattori" (Hattori Tokaiten in Japanese; currently named Seiko Holdings Corporation) in the Ginza area of Tokyo, Japan.
  • 1892 -- Seikosha is established in Tokyo as the clock manufacturing arm of K. Hattori.
  • 1917 -- K. Hattori becomes a company (K. Hattori & Co., Ltd.).
  • 1937 -- The watch production division of Seikosha is split off as Daini Seikosha Co., Ltd. ( "Daini" = "The Second" Seikosha).
  •
    • 1942 -- Daiwa Kogyo, Ltd. is founded in Suwa, Nagano by Hisao Yamazaki.
    • 1943 -- Daini Seikosha establishes a factory in Suwa for manufacturing watches with Daiwa Kogyo.

FROM 1874 TO 1917,  JAPAN HAD SHED HER ANCIENT OUT-DATED WAYS AND MOVED WITH UNEXPECTED FORCE INTO THE MODERN WORLD.

JAPAN  HAD WON A MAJOR WAR AGAINST THE MIGHTY IMPERIAL RUSSIAN MILITARY, HAD CONTRIBUTED RED CROSS WORKERS TO THE BATTLE FIELDS OF FRANCE,   HAD BECOME A SUPPLIER TO THE ALLIED FORCES IN THEIR BATTLE AGAINST THE GERMANS, AND HAD  IMPROVED UPON THE ADVANCEMENTS OF THE MODERNIZED WORLD TO BECOME A BUILDER OF HER OWN WATCHES, MACHINES, ARMAMENTS, ARTILLERY, AIRPLANES, SHIPS AND TRANSPORTS .

IN FACT, AFTER THE 1904-05 ANNIHILATION OF TWO VAUNTED AND POWERFUL RUSSIAN FLEETS, AND THE VICTORY OVER RUSSIA'S LAND FORCES, SHE HAD BECOME A WELCOME TREATY PARTNER OF THE USA, BRITAIN AND THE WORLD AT LARGE.

BY 1917,  DAINI SEIKOSHA HAD IMPROVE WESTERN TECHNOLOGY IN THEIR CAPABILITIES TO PRODUCE MODERN WATCHES. THEY INVITED SWISS AND AMERICAN WATCH COMPANIES TO JAPAN. THEY DID WHAT THE JAPANESE DO BEST. UNDER THE BANNER OF POSSIBLE EXPORTS, THESE COMPANIES WOULD, IN FACT, TEACH THE JAPANESE WOW TO MAKE WATCHES THAT, BY THE 1950'S, WOULD COMPETE TOE TO TOE, WITH THE ENTIRE GLOBAL WATCH COMMUNITY.

AAAA-WALTHAM-JAPAN.jpg (91326 bytes)

IN 1917, JAPAN HAD AGREEMENTS WITH THE MOST ADVANCED COMPANIES IN SWITZERLAND AND THE UNITED STATES. THE ABOVE ADD IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO THIS OFFER AND ITS HISTORY.

MANY SEIKOSHA MILITARY WATCHES CONTAINED WALTHAM MOVEMENTS! IN ADDITION, SWISS TECHNOLOGY AND FINISHING TECHNIQUES CAN BE FOUND IN THE LIMITED ANTIQUE VINTAGE JAPANESE TIME PIECES AVAILABLE TODAY, SUCH AS THIS SEIKOSHA SEIKO TIME PIECE WITH SEIKOSHA MOVEMENT THAT HAS ALL THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A SWISS OR AMERICAN TIME PIECE OF THE DAY.

THE SEIKOSHA WATCH >
SEIKO > NATION + DELIKATA + OTHERS....

I SPEND MOST OF MY "SPARE" TIME SEEKING CANDIDATES FOR RESTORATION,. I DO NOT COLLECT THEM, I SELL THEM-- SO I CAN DO IT OVER AND OVER. SO, I COULD NOT BELIEVE MY LUCK WHEN I DISCOVERED THIS ORIGINAL SEIKOSHA SEIKO/NATION

AFTER THE RUSSO-JAPANESE  WAR [1905], WITH JAPAN'S STUNNING VICTORY, JAPAN WAS ON THE MOVE. HER EMPIRE ON THE BUILD -MOTIVATED BY A GROWING RIGHT WING IMPERIAL MILITARY  WING - JAPAN, WITH FULL SUPPORT OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY,  RECEIVED THE   RIGHT  TO "COLONIZE" KOREA.

IN REALITY, THE US, BRITISH AND FRENCH GOVERNMENTS SIMPLY HANDED OVER KOREA [1910] --WHICH HAD BEEN A RUSSIAN SEMI-COLONY--AS A "REWARD" OR THE LATE "SPOILS RESULTING FROM THE WAR.

IT WAS DURING THIS TIME THAT JAPAN SOUGHT WESTERN TECHNOLOGY IN A BID TO FURTHER WHAT WAS AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY FROM A BACKWARDS TECHNOLOGY NATION OF 1875, TO A NATION THAT DESTROYED TWO RUSSIAN FLEETS IN 1905.

THE ONE AND ONLY POWERFUL SEIKOSHA COMPANY TRAVELED THE GLOBE ABSORBING ALL THE INNOVATIONS IN TIME KEEPING AND SOON BECAME THE MAIN WATCH AND CLOCK DRIVING AND PRODUCING FORCE IN JAPAN.

THE FOLLOWING PICTURES REPRESENT SEIKOSHA' CULMINATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE; A LINE OF STANDARD & MILITARY WATCHES (THERE WERE MILITARY ACTIONS IN KOREA, CHINA, MANCHURIA AND OTHER PLACES 24/7) WITH UNIQUE NAMES SUCH AS    "NATION" [ SIGNIFYING THE JAPANESE NATION] SEIKO [WAS NOT A BRAND YET], DELIKATA AND OTHERS. THESE WATCHES WOULD BE WORN AND CHERISHED JAPANESE SOLDIERS.

BETWEEN 1874 AND 1900,  JAPAN HAD SHED HER ANCIENT OUT-DATED WAYS AND MOVED WITH

BETWEEN 1894 AND 1904. JAPAN  HAD BECOME A BUILDER OF HER OWN MODERN ARMAMENTS

IN FACT, AFTER THE 1904-05 ANNIHILATION OF TWO VAUNTED AND POWERFUL RUSSIAN FLEETS,

1904 MT. FUJI WALTHAM WATCH DIAL

wpe4D.jpg (54120 bytes)

BETWEEN 1905 AND 1917,  SEIKOSHA/K. HATTORI SENT TEAMS OF EASTERN DRESSED MEN OF SCIENCE
AND TECHNOLOGY ACROSS THE GLOBE IN DISCOVERY OF WESTERN WATCH MAKING TECHNOLOGY
TO IMPROVE THEIR  OWN CAPABILITIES TO PRODUCE MODERN WATCHES.

IMG_9762.JPG (179018 bytes)

THESE MEN WOULD ARRIVE AND WESTERN CORPORATIONS WOULD WINE AND DINE THEM WITH AN
EYE TOWARDS SELLING THEIR PRODUCTS IN JAPAN. IN FACT, IN PRIVATE, MANY OF THESE COMPANIES
WOULD LOOK DOWN ON THESE MEN AND THEIR "FUNNY WAYS".

EVENTUALLY, THE JAPANESE WOULD NOT ONLY INVITE A FEW SWISS AND AMERICAN WATCH
COMPANIES TO JAPAN, BUT ENCOURAGED "PARTNERSHIPS" WHERE WESTERN WATCHES AND
TECHNOLOGY WOULD BE SOLD DIRECTLY TO JAPANESE CONSUMERS.

IN SOME CASES, AS WITH THE WALTHAM WATCH COMPANY, THE COMPANY WOULD UTILIZE THEIR
PARTNERSHIP TO SELL THEIR TIME PIECES IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES; AS DEMONSTRATED BY THE
1917 ADVERTISEMENT ABOVE.

BUT, AS THE WESTERN COMPANIES BRAGGED ABOUT THEIR COUP D' ETAT, THE  JAPANESE DID WHAT
THE JAPANESE DO BEST. UNDER THE BANNER OF EXPORTS TO JAPAN,  WESTERN COMPANIES WOULD,
IN FACT, TEACH THE JAPANESE HOW TO MAKE WATCHES THAT, BY THE 1950'S, WOULD COMPETE TOE
TO TOE WITH THE ENTIRE GLOBAL WATCH COMMUNITY.

SOON JAPAN WOULD PROFIT FROM THEIR AGREEMENTS WITH THE MOST ADVANCED COMPANIES IN
SWITZERLAND AND THE UNITED STATES. JAPAN WOULD PRODUCE THEIR OWN WATCHES WHILE LIMITING
NEW IMPORTS. SOON, THE JAPANESE SEIKOSHA WATCH BRAND WOULD BE PRODUCING CIVILIAN AND
MILITARY WATCHES WITH WALTHAM [AND SOME SWISS] MOVEMENTS IN EVERY WAY BUT NAME.

THE ABOVE VINTAGE PAPER FLAG HAS BEEN PLASTICIZED
