INVERTED dials were originally developed to enable owners of cars, trucks and airplanes/areoplanes to convert pocket watches into dash clocks.
The inverted dial positioned the winding stem at the bottom, making is convenient to wind, and to some what protect the watch from soil, dirt water.
Those watches with sub-seconds would mean the register would be at the top making it easier to view more precisely and time more precisely.
By 1908, speedometer companies were producing and marketing clocks as after-market accessories.
In 1911 the first dash board Chronograph was patented by Heuer. It had it's crown UP.
Between In 1912- 1925, Phinney-Walker and Waltham made available car clocks that wound from the front rim of the clock and eight day clocks. with winding from bottom. [ Jaeger & Waltham made eight day watches with inverted dials].
During its day, the reverse/inverted dial was popular among military personal, private drivers, pilots, race car drivers, and many others who required an easy access dash mounted watch/clock device .
I have seen WWI photos of men wearing ELGIN reverse/inverted dial pocket watches on LANYARDS around their necks. And I have overhauled several ELGIN 15j inverted dial pocket watches with long loop-over-loop leather "belt fob"s. I have worked on some Japanese and German inverted dial military pocket watches; including two Japanese ELGINS! And Waltham was extremely popular in Japan since 1914.
Following World War I, the United States was swamped with aviators who invested in war-surplus aircraft. These flyers earned income with barnstorming campaigns and by performing aerobatic maneuvers at events. Many of these flyers would EVENTUALLY join various commercial ventures.
In 1918, the United States Postal Service received financing from Congress to begin experimenting with air mail service using Curtiss Jenny aircraft procured by the United States Army Air Service. And in 1919 Chalk's International Airlines began a service between Miami and Bimini in the Bahamas.
