 WWII
CENTER SWEEP

Prior to WWII, most watches had a sub-second register above the #6 position. This design failed to allow precision seconds timing. The sub-second style dial, with a tiny second hand rotating around a tiny seconds register at the 6 position, was difficult to utilize for timing events. In most cases it was ignored. On the other hand, a sweep second hand could be used to time events, mark events, and was easier to read .

By 1942, the sweep second hand watch had became "the" watch. Two of the major reasons were the Government issued U.S.A. A-11 hacking sweep seconds pilots watch and the sweep seconds watches in demand by Doctors, Medics and Nurses and other professionals.. The sweep second watch simply made the watch more than an instrument to "tell time"....

THE DESIGN

So, what did Pierce and others do?

Did they re-tool and re-design new movements? NO!

They simply placed a hollow canon pinion that allowed a wheeled center shaft to protrude through the dial, mounted a second hand to it, and ran the combo with the very sub-seconds wheel they were eliminating...

Instead of the drive train turning the dial protruding shaft/pinion at 6 position connected to the tiny second hand, they mounted a large brass/alloy wheel on the opposite side of the shaft that now protruded through the bridge. That wheel turned a wheel on top of a NEW center "shaft' held in position be a new this jeweled bridge that went through a new HOLLOW center cannon pinion in the center of the movement that then protruded through the center of the dial where a new long sweep second hand attached;  the idea being that one had a large second hand that went round in tune with the movement and the chapter ring so one could count, time & now even synchronize.

 THE PIERCE PARASHOCK
UTILIZES
LARGE GOLD JEWEL HOLDERS
A "PARASHOCK" SYSTEM
[INCABLOC ]
TO PROTECT THE BALANCE
AND
A VERY UNIQUE
MOVEMENT HOLD-DOWN SYSTEM

THERE ARE NO SCREWS
METAL HOLD-DOWNS
OR ANY TYPE OF
STANDARD MOVEMENT HOLDER

WHEN THE MOVEMENT IS FITTED INTO THE CASE
THE DIAL POSITIONS AND CENTERS
THE MOVEMENT
WITH SPACE ON ALL SIDES

THE STEM WITH CROWN IS
PLACED INTO THE MOVEMENT
AND LOCKED DOWN

THE CASE BACK IS THEN SCREWED DOWN

AND WHAT HOLDS THE MOVEMENT

A UNIQUE STEEL SPRING SYSTEM

WHEN THE CASE BACK IS TIGHTENED
THE CASE BACK CONTACTS THIS SPRING STEEL
WHICH HOLDS THE MOVEMENT
YET
WHILE HOLDING THE MOVEMENT IN THE CASE
IT ALSO ALLOWS FOR MOVEMENT
IN THE EVENT THE WATCH IS DROPPED

[AFTER OVERHAUL]

NOTICE THE THE HOLD DOWN
SPRING FOR THE MOVEMENT?
IT ALLOWS MOVEMENT OF THE MOVEMENT
IT THE EVENT OF HARD SHOCK

NOTICE THE BALANCE SHOCK ABSORBER?
THIS IS A MUST TO PROTECT THE BALANCE STAFF

NOTICE THE LARGE HACKED SECONDS WHEEL?
THIS PROVIDES A SWEEP SECOND HAND WITH CHAPTER RING
FOR TIMING, MEASURING AND COMPUTATIONS NOT
AVAILABLE WITH THE DOMINANT --AT THIS TIME--
SUB-SECONDS REGISTER WATCH MOVEMENT.

I RECOMMEND A PIERCE BECAUSE OF THE AWESOME DESIGN, ITS STEEL SCREW CASE BACK WITH ALUMINUM GASKET, ITS WONDERFUL DIALS, ITS CLASSIC TRIPLE RINGED BEZEL, ITS WONDERFUL P103 MOVEMENTS AND ONE OTHER MAIN DESIGN FEATURE:

BESIDES HAVING A PARASHOCK ABSORBER
ON TOP AND BOTTOM OF BALANCE STAFF
THE ACTUAL CASE BECOMES A SHOCK ABSORBER
PROTECTING THE ENTIRE MOVEMENT BY LIMITING THE CONTACT OF THE MOVEMENT WITH THE CASE.

NOTHING TOUCHES THE MOVEMENT
SEE THE STEEL SPRING POPPING UP IN THE
IN THE PICTURES ABOVE?

THAT IS WHAT HOLDS THE
MOVEMENT IN THE CASE.

THE  CASE BACK PUSHES AGAINST THE SPRING
IF THE WATCH IS DROPPED, THAT SPRING
FURTHER PROTECTS THE MOVEMENT BY
GIVING SOME ROOM FOR THE MOVEMENT
TO MOVE IN THE CASE.....

I REST MY CASE
