THE A-11 HAS A CLAIM TO FAME

Bomber and fighter crews and pilots required the ability to mission with time. The most crucial contribution to an Allied victory was the delivery of ordinance across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Pacific over land and sea.

For critical timing the United States Army/Navy Air Forces utilized the A-11 Hacking Wrist watch.

The A-11 was a specification and US production standard for mainly US  Air Corps wrist watches that were produced under contract with the US Government War department by Elgin, Bulova and Waltham.

Though most design aspects were universal:

Black dial, white hands, a handwound hacking movement with center sweep second hand, same minute and hour hands, hour numbers from 1 to 12, a second chapter scale with smaller minute/second numbers in increments of 10 on the outside edge of the dial,  accuracy of 30 seconds per day at room temperaturewas contract specified, there were MINOR case and dial/hands variations, SUCH AS COIN BEZEL VS SMOOTH BEZEL.

THE BULOVA AND WALTHAM VERSIONS DID NOT HAVE THE BEAUTY OR SOPHISTICATION OF THE ELGIN COIN EDGE SCREW DOWN BEZEL AND CASE BACK.

HACKING [STOPPING] IS ACCOMPLISHED WHEN THE CROWN IS PULLED AND A MECHANISM STOPS THE BALANCE IN ORDER TO SYNCHRONIZE THE WATCH TO A KNOWN TIME SOURCE, USUALLY THE SQUADRON COMMANDERS TIME PIECE.

NOTE: THOUGH THE MAJORITY OF PARTS IN THIS 1944/45 A-11, INCLUDING MOVEMENT, DIAL & HANDS ARE FROM THE ORIGINAL1944/45 ELGIN A-11, UTILIZING THE PROCEDURES AS OUTLINED IN SEVERAL US ARMY AIRCORP WATCH SERVICE AND OVERHAUL MANUALS, WHICH DEMONSTRATE THE CANNIBALIZATION OF PARTS FROM SEVERELY DAMAGED WATCHES TO FIX REPAIRABLE WATCHES, ROC REBUILT THIS 1944/45 A-11 BY UTILIZING SOME GENUINE VINTAGE WWII ELGIN A-11 MOVEMENT PARTS FROM A 1942 A-11 AND A CROWN AND STEM FROM A 1943 ELGIN A-11.

IMG_9157.JPG (118339 bytes)

THE NEW CRYSTAL, BALANCE STAFF, 16 JEWELS, THE HAIR SPRING & MAIN SPRING, ARE NEW OLD STOCK PARTS.

NOTE: THE USE OF PARTS FOR AN ELGIN A-11 FROM OTHER ELGIN A-11 DOES NOT REDUCE, ALTER, CHANGE OR HARM THE VALUE OF THE COMPLETED WATCH. 40% OF ALL TOP END RESTORATIONS MUST UTILIZE PARTS FROM OTHER WATCHES WITH SIMILAR PARTS AND/OR MOVEMENTS DUE TO A LACK OF REPLACEMENT PARTS.

NOW, LETS CHECK OUT ONE OF ROC'S MOST AMAZING RESTORATIONS!

IMG_9380.JPG (165400 bytes)

PARTS PARTS ARTS
IT IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE TO RE-CREATE A WATCH TO MINT CONDITION
ABOVE ARE MOVEMENTS PARTS FROM 5 A-11 MOVEMENTS SOME
GILDED AND VARIOUS PARTS. WE HAVE TO SPEND A LOT TO REBUILD
AND WARRANTY THEM. ESPECIALLY IF PARTS ARE NEEDED IN THE FUTURE

IMG_9381.JPG (169737 bytes)

NOTE THE MOST EXPENSIVE MODELS ARE THOSE WITH GILDED MOVEMENTS
THOSE ABOVE ARE FROM TWO EARLY VIETNAM ERA HACKING ELGIN

IMG_9379.JPG (142755 bytes)

EVERY EXTRA PART -GOOD OR BAD -ARE KEPT AND UTILIZED IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER
TO FINISH THIS WATCH IN THE CONDITION IT IS IN 200.00 WENT INTO PARTS.
YES, LEFT OVER PARTS CAN BE USED. BUT THEY MEAN LITTLE AGAINST THE COSTS.
SO, SAY 90.00 FOR A MOVEMENT NOT RUNNING JUST TO GET A BARREL?.
WELL, THAT IS 90.00 COST FOR THE WATCH EVEN THOUGH SOME OTHER PARTS
MAY BE USED LATER. WE SIMPLY CANNOT WRITE OFF COSTS FOR
POSSIBLE PROFITS AT A LATER DATE..

IMG_9383.JPG (184558 bytes)

I BELIEVE THAT WE HAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS JUST IN ELGIN
MILITARY PARTS. MOVEMENTS DIALS CASES. A NOTE. USING PARTS TO
BUILD A WATCH LIKE THIS DOES NOT MAKE THE VALUE LESS. PERIOD.
MOST OF THE A-11'A THAT SURVIVED TO BE SOLD ARE MADE UP
OF PARTS FROM OTHER A-11 WATCHES. IT MEANS NOTHING AT ALL
AS LONG AS THE PARTS ARE THE ORIGINAL ELGIN A-11 PARTS

THIS IS A MINT CONDITION, TOTALLY OVERHAULED, 16 JEWEL, ELGIN GRADE 539 CENTER SWEEPING HACKING A-II MOVEMENT IN STUNNING BRUSH FINISH - WITH FACTORY MILITARY BLACK FINISHED CROWN WHEEL, RATCHET WHEEL & BALANCE ADJUSTER

IN ADDITION TO A NEW MAINSPRING, 16 NEW JEWELS, A BALANCE STAFF & HAIR SPRING, INSURING THAT THIS A-11 IS IN MINT CONDITION FROM THE MOVEMENT TO THE CASE, DIAL, HANDS, CRYSTAL AND CROWN, WE REPLACED THE TRAIN BRIDGE, BRASS SWEEPS WHEEL, SWEEPS PINION AND HOLD DOWN WITH THOSE OF THE 1942 MOVEMENT .

SWEEP-HACKING.jpg (40663 bytes)

THE ELGIN 539 SWEEP SECONDS MOD/HACK.

The 1943 transformation of an Elgin 15-jewel 539 movement with sub-seconds to one with a central sweep second was accomplished by adding a new pinion bridge that attached to the mainspring bridge

ELGIN TOOK A SUB-SECONDS MOVEMENT AND REPLACED THE SOLID CENTER WHEEL PINION WITH A HOLLOW PINION. THEN THE REPLACED THE WHEEL THAT DROVE THE SUB SECOND HAD WITH A WHEEL WITH LONGER PINION. THEY THEN DRILLED THE MAIN SPRING BRIDGE TO ALLOW THIS LONGER PINION TO COME UP THROUGH THE BRIDGE HOLD.

THEY THEN PRESSED THE LARGE BRASS WHEEL ONTO THAT PINION. THUS, WHEN THE WATCH RUNS, INSTEAD OF A PINION COMING THROUGH THE DIAL ABOVE THE NUMBER 6 TO DRIVE THE SIB-SECONDS HAND, THE OPPOSITE OCCURS WITH THE LARGE BRASS WHEEL TURING ON THE BOTTOM OF MOVEMENT.

ELGIN THEN MADE A SIMPLE STEEL PINION WITH SMALL STEEL GEAR. THIS PINION IS PLACED IN THE CENTER HOLE. AND PROTRUDES THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE DIAL. IT IS POWERED BY THE LARGE BRASS WHEEL. ON THE OPPOSITE DIAL SIDE, THE OTHER END OF THE PINION IS NOW READY FOR A SWEEP SECONDS HAND.
