UNIVERSAL GENEVA

The company "Universal Watch" was founded in Locle, Switzerland in January of 1894 for the production of watches, dials, domes, movements, fitted boxes and packages for watches.

In 1894 Universal patented a 24 hour indication watch.

By 1898, Universal, while producing varied high quality watches, introduced a line of  high quality chronograph and minutes recorders.

In 1919 Universal moved to the Geneva headquarter.

In 1925, Universal created a similar system to the John Harwood Bumper watch called the "Auto-Re", a self-winding system with an oscillating weight mechanism with spring-buffers.

In 1934 Universal changed the company name to "Universal Watch Co Ltd. Geneve" and introduced the first chronograph wrist-watch with two push-buttons.

Universal introduced a chronograph with an additional 12 hour register.

In 1944"Tri-Compax" model was introduced.

Sales increased incessantly all over the world. Therefore, Universal started to be a synonym for quality, good taste and reliability as well.

In 1947 a  precision automatic caliber 138 with an oscillating mass with single direction winding was introduced and then the    "Polerouter"  ( previously called "Polarouter") was introduced.

In 1955 Universal Geneve introduced the calibre 215 "Microtor", a new automatic calibre with a small rotor incorporated into the movement rather than on the top (the smallest automatic movement at that time).

London hallmarks:1896-1915

THANKS TO THE "MASTER OF THE CARTOUCH"

THE ABOVE CARTOUCH/HALLMARKS INFORMS US OF THE YEAR OF MANUFACTURE, THE METAL  CONTENT, THE CITY OF IMPORTATION AND THE MAKER.

IN THIS CASE WE HAVE:

A) A 925 IN OVAL WHICH IS STERLING SILVER 92.5% PURE SILVER

B) A LONDON IMPORT MARK CONSISTING OF AN INVERTED OMEGA ON A CROSSED OVAL CARTOUCHE -OVAL FOR SILVER VS RECTANGULAR FOR GOLD.

C) AN "S" IN AN "M CARTOUCHE SIGNIFIES THE DATE OF 1913/14/

NOTE: THE "S" DATE CARTOUCHE HAS THREE DATES: 1917 1933 1941. THE ONE FOR THIS WATCH IS THE MATCHING THE CITY IMPORT CODE. THE LONDON IMPORT CODE ON THIS TIMEPIECE MEANS NOT BIRMINGHAM OR ANY OTHER CITY. SO A 1913/14 DATE APPLIES.

D) THE SILVERSMITH/S WHO MADE THE CASE A RECTANGULAR WITH CENTER STACK CARTOUCHE WITH S P IN THE CENTER. OUT TWO DAY RESEARCH DID NOT TURN UP THE SILVERSMITH/S.

E) THE SERIAL NUMBER 144618

F) A N OR M. WE HAVE NOT DECIPHERED THE MEANING.
