WWII AND THE USA WATCH INDUSTRY

WITH LITERALLY MILLIONS OF WWII SOLDIERS AND ONLY A FRACTION RECEIVING  MILITARY ISSUE WATCHES, THE WATCH INDUSTRY IN-- OVER DRIVE -- PRODUCED WATCHES FOR SOLDIERS UNTIL THEY WERE REQUIRED TO RE-TOOL TO BUILD TIMING DEVICES, AIR AND SHIP INSTRUMENTS AND OTHER DEVICES LIKE FUSES.IT FACT, ONLY THE SWISS WATCH INDUSTRY CONTINUED TO BUILD WATCHES. AND, AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE WAR, THE SWISS WERE ABLE TO TAKE OVER THE LARGEST MARKET SHARE IN THE USA BECAUSE U.S. COMPANIES REQUIRED SEVERAL YEARS TO RETOOL.

Dietrich Gruen
Born in Germany in 1847, Dietrich Gruen would strive to learn the sciences and at 15 years of age would become  a watchmaker's apprentice. After 3 years in Switzerland, he emigrated to the U.S.A.  By 1874, he would patent a safety pinion for pocket watches which prevented damage to the watch movement if the watch's mainspring broke.

Columbus Watch Manufacturing Company
In an 1876 partnership with the son of a prominent Columbus, Ohio watchmaker and businessman, W.J. Savage, Dietrich Gruen's son of started the Columbus Watch Manufacturing Company to import movements from Switzerland, then finish and install Gruen's 1874 safety pinion design.

SOME FINISH WEAR ALONG BOTTOM EDGES AND UNDER
LUGS FROM SKIN MOISTURE OVER THE DECADES.
BUT IT HAS NO EFFECT. WE COULD PLATE IT BUT
THIS BEAUTY REQUIRES NO RESTORATION OUTSIDE
OF CLEANING. IT IS WORTH MORE AND LOOKS BETTER AS IT IS!

Columbus Watch Company
Refinanced and reorganized in 1882 under the new name “Columbus Watch Company”, Gruen started manufacturing complete movements in the U.S.A. Only a year later, during the Panic of 1893, shareholders forced Gruen out and reincorporated as the New Columbus Watch Company, which ceased operations 1903.

D. Gruen & Son
In partnership with his son, Frederick G. Gruen, Dietrich Gruen founded a new company in 1894. D. Gruen & Son designed a line of pocket watch movements which incorporated with an escapement designed by Moritz Grossman and were manufactured by a German watchmaking firm in Glasshütte, Germany.

SUPER CLOSE UP MAGNIFICATION SHOWS THE DIAL MAKERS MARK "GERMANY". THE HISTORIC
FACTS OF TIES THAT BOUND GRUEN TO GERMANY ARE IMMENSE. THROUGH TWO
WORLD WARS WHERE GERMANY WAS PROMINENT TO SAY THE LEAST AT WARFARE, GRUEN AND
DESCENDANTS KEPT THE COMPANY GOING , AND STILL MAINTAINED TIES TO HIS MOTHERLAND.
THROUGHOUT THE COMPANIES MANY CHANGES,NAMES,  FAMILY TIES, GRUEN WAS SUPREME..

D. Gruen & Sons
D. Gruen & Son would again alter their name to reflect the addition of another son, George J. Gruen, in 1897, and the company would move again this time to Cincinnati, Ohio and movements were still being manufactured in Glasshütte, Germany.

D. Gruen, Sons & Co
By 1900 D. Gruen & Sons became D. Gruen, Sons & Co when a partial merging with a Swiss company. Glasshütte, Germany would be traded for Biel/Bienne, Switzerland and a subsidiary formed and named “The Gruen Watch Manufacturing Company”.

*****************************************************

The Gruen Watch Company

The greatest merger and name change occurred in 1922 when D. Gruen, Sons & Co, Cincinnati, The Gruen Watch Manufacturing Co, Biel/Bienne Switzerland, and the Gruen National Watch Case Co were merged to form “The Gruen Watch Company” in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. And when the 1930 Depression hit, The Gruen Watch Company arranged a deal with Germany's famous "Alpina" watch company to produce a dual branded Alpina/Gruen watch. And when American watch companies began to lose market share to Swiss imports after WWII  and began to move their manufacturing to Switzerland all through the 1940s and 1950s, Gruen, who had always manufactured watch movements in Germany or Switzerland, launched the '21' series of wristwatches (named for their 21-jewel movements) which were entirely made in the United States. (though movements were still made in Germany or Switzerland. But by 1953, the Gruen family would sell their interest in the company and, without the Gruens, the The Gruen Watch Company was broken up and sold in 1958.
