PHENIX
The 'Phenix Watch Co., SA' was founded in Porrentruy in 1873 as 'Dubail, Monnin, Frossard & Cie.' and the company set a mark in Swiss watch history as it was the first watch company that had a registered caliber.

MILITARY WATCH OR NOT
THERE WERE LITERALLY MILLIONS OF SOLDIERS DURING WWI, WWII, THE KOREAN WAR & VIETNAM AND ONLY A FRACTION WERE PROVIDED WITH MILITARY ISSUE WATCHES. THE WATCH INDUSTRY TOOK NOTICE OF THIS FACT AND PRODUCED AND MARKETED MILITARY DESIGNED WATCHES. WATCHES DESIGNED AND SOLD TO SOLDIERS WITH NEW FEATURES THAT WOULD EVENTUALLY MAKE THEIR WAY INTO EVERY DAY WATCHES.  .

MILITARY DESIGN
THE TEN YEAR PERIOD BETWEEN 1938 AND 1948 SAW THE UNIQUE STYLE OF MILITARY WATCHES SWEEP THE GLOBE. THE DEIGNS INCLUDED 29 TO 34 MM CASES, SCREW ON BACKS THAT AFFORDED SOME WATER PROTECTION, SHOCK ABSORBERS IN 15 AND 17 JEWELED MOVEMENTS. THE DIALS WERE ALSO REVAMPED TO WHITE OR BLACK WITH, IN SOME CASES, TWO TONE COLORS. MOST HAD SWEEP SECONDS WITH OUTER CHAPTER RINGS AND LUMED HANDS AND IN MANY MODELS A RED OR CONTRASTING COLOR SWEEP SECOND HANDS. THIS WATCH HAS MANY OF THESE CHARACTERISTICS.

THE ABOVE PICTURE IS FROM 1914. IT SHOWS THE SALE OF ARMY TRENCH WRIST WATCHES AND KICHENER LEATHER MILITARY STRAPS. IT IS PHOTOS LIKE THIS ONE THAT DEMONSTRATE THAT MORE MILITARY DESIGNED WATCHES WERE MADE AND SOLD DIRECTLY TO CIVILIAN AND MILITARY PERSONAL THAN THOSE ISSUED BY THE GOVERNMENT.

THE KOREAN WAR

The Korean peninsula was ruled by Japan from 1910 until the end of World War II. Following the surrender of Japan in 1945, American administrators divided the peninsula along the 38th Parallel, with United States troops occupying the southern part and Soviet troops occupying the northern part.

The Korean War 19501953 was a military conflict sponsored by external powers between the Republic of Korea, supported by the United Nations, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, supported by the People's Republic of China (PRC), with military material aid from the Soviet Union.

General Douglas MacArthur's command of     US forces occupying Japan and British Commonwealth troops in Hong Kong were the only United Nations members with large forces that were close enough to engage.

This it was the US and British troops that bore the brunt of the war.

The first British force included the 1st Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and 1st Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment.

Though the Korean War combined strategies and tactics of WWI and WWII, the use of JETS, including the worlds most advanced jet, the swept wing Soviet MiG-15 Fago jet, meant that new and advanced tactics & equipment were also primary in this "forgotten" war.

The war initially began as a mobile campaign of swift infantry attacks followed by air bombing raids, but by 1951 it became static trench war of attrition.

Two million people would die during the Korean war, which ended with an armistice signed on 27 July 1953.

HISTORY FOR MY BRITISH FRIENDS

63,000 UK troops were sent to Korea. 1,078 would die and over 1,000  taken prisoner. Being taken prisoner in Korea meant mistreatment and  "political re-education". Some 82 British Commonwealth prisoners never returned home and are presumed dead.
