ACCUTRON

.1964-NEW-YORK-WORLDS-FAIR-BULOVA-ACCUTRON.jpg (146172 bytes)

In 1960 Bulova's introduced the "Accutron" watch.
The "Accutron" watch operated utilizing a 360 hertz tuning fork to drive a mechanical gear train to turn the hands. The tuning fork was powered by a one-transistor electronic oscillator circuit, so the Accutron qualifies as the first "Electronic watch". The accutron produced a faint, high pitch hum which came from the vibrating tuning fork instead of ticking.

The ability to legitimately claim the Accutron as the most precise wristwatch in existence was a tremendous boon for the company from 1960 to 1969 they dominated the market. In 1969 Seiko introduced the first quartz watch titled the Astron. By late 1970, Seiko was  mass producing quartz movement watches at less cost than the Accutron yet as precise as an Accutron. Bulova would produce the Accutron for 17 years.
