THE FIRST PLEXIGLAS AUTOMATIC DIVE WATCHES

U-S-NAVY-CONTRACT-1.jpg (67500 bytes)
U.S. NAVY SPECA MIL W 22176 A

The modern scuba diving watch was introduced to the public in 1954 at the annual watch trade show in Basel, Switzerland; With existing contracts with the Air Forces and Army, the US Navy entered into an agreement with the Bulova Watch Company, and it's Bulova Research and Development Laboratories, to develop and manufacture a new dive watch.

THE 1964 BULOVA 666 MODEL LAUNCHED ALL FUTURE LINES AND MODELS OF THE FAMOUS NAVY MILITARY DIVE WATCHES DURING VIETNAM WAR AND ALL FUTURE BULOVA 333 FEET AND 666 FEET DIVE WATCHES.

ADDITIONALLY, THE FIRST OFFICIAL US MILITARY DIVER WATCH WAS IS THE RESULT OF THREE GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS FROM 1958,TO 1961, [MIL-W-3181 / MIL-W-22176 / MIL-W-22176A].

IT WAS IN 1961 THAT BULOVA, UNDER US NAVY CONTRACT TO PERFECT THE FIRST AUTOMATIC DIVE WATCH WITH PLEXIGLAS CRYSTAL, WAS FINALLY SUCCESSFUL AND IT PASSED ALL GOVERNMENT TESTS INCLUDING DIVING TO 392 FEET.

wpeB2.jpg (44421 bytes)

WHILE STILL IN DEVELOPMENT, IN 1963, BULOVA DROPPED THEIR CONTRACT & THE CONTRACT WAS TAKEN OVER BY BLANCPAIN, WHO PRODUCED THE TR-900 DIVE WATCH. THE TR-900 DIVE MATCHED MUCH OF THE SPECS, CASING AND OTHER DESIGNS OF BULOVA' FINAL VERSION, INCLUDING THE VERY LOOK AND DESIGN DOWN TO THE RADIUM MARKERS, BEZEL AND BEZEL INSERT. ABOUT 1000 TR-900'S WOULD BE PRODUCED UNDER TWO CONTRACTS FOR THE NAVY DURING 1964 & 1965 AND ISSUED TO NAVY UDT FROGMAN TEAMS AND MARINE RECON UNITS DURING THE VIETNAM WAR. AROUND THE SAME TIME, BULOVA RELEASED THEIR PLEXIGLAS AUTOMATIC 666 DIVE WATCH FOR COMMERCIAL SALES AND WERE AVAILABLE AT MILITARY PX. IT IS IN THIS TIME FRAME THAT ELGIN PRODUCED THEIR FIRST AUTOMATIC WATER PROOF, ALL STEEL DIVE WATCH WITH RADIUM MARKERS.

BY 1964-1967, DIVE WATCHES WERE IN HIGH DEMAND. ESPECIALLY AUTOMATICS. AND, WITH A WET HOT HUMID VIETNAM WAR BUILD UP--- THE PX WAS A HOT MARKET

BULOVA, WHO ACTUALLY DEVELOPED THE FIRST AUTOMATIC DIVE WATCH WITH PLEXIGLASS CRYSTAL UNDER US CONTRACT, RELEASED THEIR AUTOMATIC MODEL IN COMPETITION WITH THE ZODIAC SEA WOLF AUTOMATIC.

BOTH WERE INVESTED IN BY US AND AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS FROM PRIVATE TO OFFICER...I FACT, THEY MADE MORE SALES AND MONEY THAN BLANCPAIN, WHO HAD TAKEN OVER THE BULOVA CONTRACT AND UTILIZED ALL THE MAIN FEATURES OF BULOVA RESEARCH IN PRODUCING THE US MILITARY DIVE WATCH!

Operation Linebacker Vietnam
(April 1971)

Deployed to Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam as part of the major buildup of forces following President Johnson's decision to commit ground troops. In November 1965, The 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing began deploying its units to Vietnam on rotational duty while the others trained in their ground support role.

3rd Tactical Fighter Wing was involved in a variety of duties throughout South Vietnam including close air support, counterinsurgency, forward air control, interdiction and radar-controlled bombing. Numerous ground operations were fortified through air strike missions against enemy fortifications, supply areas, lines of communications and personnel. The Third was essential in providing suppressive fire during assault operations.

3rd Tactical Fighter Wing consisted of various units with different missions. As a forward operating group the 3rd tested new equipment and tactics.    Combat testing of the Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter being developed for Vietnam and other nations was accomplished by the 3rd in the  "Skoshi Tiger" project. From April 1966 to April 1967, the 3rd successfully flew the F-5 in combat. The Vietnam Airforce would receive the F-5A fighters soon after.

In November and December of 1967, the 3rd began evaluating combat capabilities of the an attack version of the USAF primary trainer, the Cessna A-37 Dragonfly.  The 604th Air Commando Squadron, attached to the wing, would eventually successfully fly and utilize the Dragonfly in a ground support role from November 1967 to September 1970

A year after the TET Offensive, the phaseout of 3d TFW F-100s at Bien Hoa began. As the the wing converted to the A-37, the 510th TFS was inactivated. By July 1970 , the 531st TFS was also inactivated with the 90th Tactical Fighter Squadron reverting back to its pre-World War II designation of an attack squadron and the 8th Bombardment Squadron reactivated as the 8th Attack Squadron. Between May and June of 1970, the wing participated in Richard Nixon's Sanctuary Counteroffensive in Cambodia aimed at depriving the enemy the use of its sanctuary bases and destroying its leadership. That campaign, like many others of this period, marked the wing's last major operation.

1971 was the time for the 3rd to move one. For 59 consecutive months, the 3rd performed non-stop combat duty in Vietnam while withstanding mortar and rocket attacks. Over 23,000 enemy casualties were inflicted as well as numerous structures, supply line and supplies and other enemy loses. 1971 would bring the orders ,to leave Vietnam for duty in Korea. Up until March of 1971,  various elements of the 3rd assisted in the phase down and turn over.

The 3d Tactical Fighter Wing moved to Kunsan Air Base, South Korea where it was equipped with the McDonnell F-4D Phantom II. Squadrons assigned included the 35th, 36th and 80th Tactical Fighter Squadrons. The 3d Tactical Fighter Wing helped provide air defense for South Korea and maintained proficiency for combat operations.

In early April 1972, the 3d Tactical Fighter Wing would receive a short notice requirement to deploy 18 F-4Ds from the 35th Tactical Fighter Squadron   in support of Linebacker I; the air campaign designed to stop the North Vietnamese 1972 Spring Offensive, launched on 30 March to conquer South Vietnam. The squadron deployed with a full complement of aircrews and maintenance personnel. During its stay in South Vietnam, nine members of the squadron received credit for destroying six North Vietnamese fighters, four Mig-21s and two Mig-19s.

THE ABOVE PIC SHOWS THE ORIGINAL
DIAL BEFORE WE RE-ILLUMINATED IT.

NOTE HANDS HAVE TRITIUM/METAL "BLEED" OR "CREEP"

NOTE THERE IS ONLY IRREGULAR FACTORY APPLIED
TRITIUM. DIAL CREEP IS AT 7 ONLY. THIS DIAL HAD
THE TRITIUM APPLIED IN A SLIGHT OVAL SHAPE
NOT UNIFORM TO EDGES + LOOKS LIKE IT IS MISSING
AT THE LUME BELOW THE "6" MARKER?
IT WAS LIKE THAT FROM FACTORY

NOTE "2" MARKER? DARK COLOR?
THAT IS TRITIUM THAT INTERACTED WITH METAL
MAYBE FROM MOISTURE

IMG_2059.JPG (127125 bytes)

THE DIAL CAN BE RESTORED. BUT A DIAL LIKE THIS ONE?
HECK NO! IT SIMPLY IS OUTSTANDING! THIS IS THE PIC WE HAD! NO CHANGES! THOUGH SOME RADIUM OR TRITIUM DIALS THAT ARE
ORIGINAL AND LOOKING LIKE THE ONE ABOVE WE LEAVE AS IS

OTHERS WE APPLY AF LUMINOVA OVER THE TRITIUM OR RADIUM. IN THIS CASE, NOTE THAT THERE IS SOME TRITIUM CREEP AT "7"
THE STYLE OF ILLUMINATION HERE SHOWN IS FACTORY THAT IS CORRECT. THE FACTORY APPLICATION OF TRITIUM WAS NOT IN PERFECT  RECTANGULAR SHAPE RATHER "DROPPED" WITH VARYING DEPTH AND SHAPE.

IMG_3888.JPG (155195 bytes)
GOOGLE
"GOLDSMITHWORKS WATCH LUMINOVA ILLUMINATION"
HUNDREDS OF PAGES CAN BE DISCOVERED
OF OUR PAST ILLUMINATED EBAY OFFERS

THE ILLUMINATION WORK IS PERFECT IN MOST OF THE OFFERS.
BUT WHEN RE-APPLYING AND RE-ILLUMINATING WATCHES WITH NICE ORIGINAL DIALS, THE RE-ILLUMINATION IS ALWAYS OVER THE OLD
SO THE SHAPE IS SIMILAR. IF TRITIUM HAS ERODED SOME WHERE
THE RE-ILLUMINATION IS THE SAME. ALSO, THAT MINOR CREEP AT 7? IT IS THERE TO STAY- UNLESS WE ACTUALLY REMOVE IT ALL
AND THAT MEANS REDIAL..

IMG_3865.JPG (125122 bytes)

HERE LUMINOVA WAS APPLIED TO EXISTING TRITIUM. NOTE # 2 HOUR, THE ILLUMINATION MATERIAL WAS NEARLY ALL WORN AWAY. WE DID NOT ADD MORE THAN WAS WORN! IT LOOKS ORIGINAL IN ALL CASES, --PUN INTENDED--  AS IN AGED. THAT IS THE KEY. RESTORE YET MAKE IT LOOK LIKE 40+ YEARS NORMAL . IF WE WANTED NEW WE WOULD RESTORE THE DIAL.

IMG_3883.JPG (140582 bytes)

WE KEEP ORIGINAL HANDS 90% OF THE TIME. WHEN RESTORING SOME OF THE OLD, BEAT-UP HANDS, WE CLEAN AND TREAT FOR CREEP: THE AGING OF OLD FINISHES CREEPING INTO THE ILLUMINATION. LUMINOVA CAN SOMETIMES ABSORB "CREEP".

IMG_3932.JPG (148079 bytes)

THE END RESULT IS SOME DISCOLORATION ALONG EDGES. THIS DOES NOT CONTINUE. THE TOTAL RESULT IS A MINTY YET AGED LOOK THAT GOES WITH IT'S HISTORY.
