AVIA

AVIA WAS THE SWISS COMPANY THAT MADE THIS WATCH .

MANUFACTURER
The manufacturer Avia was Degoumois & Cie in Neuchatel, La Chaux de Fonds and the date of registration is 1910. Up until 1910 timekeeping was primarily based around pocket or fob watches. AVIA became an innovator in the development of the wristwatch

DISTRIBUTOR
The US distributor of AVIA was M.A. Mead & Co in Chicago, Illinois. Ball Watch Co also distributed watches made by AVIA for Ball Watch Co and sold them branded as GARLAND.

WWII
During the war years AVIA manufactured and Mead marketed WWII watches, including a military timer that was utilized by air crews searching for submarines. It employed a highly accurate Timer and Stop Watch. A famous add for a Hamilton version read "He's looking for a U- boat.. in the sky!

MILITARY WATCH OR NOT
THERE WERE LITERALLY MILLIONS OF SOLDIERS DURING WWII. ONLY A FRACTION WERE PROVIDED WITH MILITARY ISSUE WATCHES. THE WATCH INDUSTRY TOOK NOTICE OF THIS FACT AND BEGAN PRODUCING AND MARKETING MILITARY DESIGNED WATCHES WHICH WERE DESIGNED AND SOLD TO SOLDIERS.

GRUEN PRODUCED 8 DESIGNS FOR THE DEFENSE SERVICES
THIS 1942 ADD DEMONSTRATES THAT MORE MILITARY WATCHES
WERE PRODUCED FOR DIRECT SALES.THAN GOVERNMENT WATCHES
PROVES OUR POINT THAT THE BEST MILITARY WATCHES WERE PRIVATE BRANDS

MILITARY DESIGN
THE TEN YEAR PERIOD BETWEEN 1938 AND 1948 SAW THE UNIQUE STYLE OF MILITARY WATCHES SWEEP THE GLOBE. THE DEIGNS INCLUDED 29 TO 34 MM CASES, SCREW ON BACKS THAT AFFORDED SOME WATER PROTECTION, SHOCK ABSORBERS IN 15 AND 17 JEWELED MOVEMENTS. THE DIALS WERE ALSO REVAMPED TO WHITE OR BLACK WITH, IN SOME CASES, TWO TONE COLORS. MOST HAD SWEEP SECONDS WITH OUTER CHAPTER RINGS AND LUMED HANDS AND IN MANY MODELS A RED SWEEP SECOND HANDS.
