MOST GLYCINE WATCHES WERE SOLD TO THE GERMAN ARMY

FROM  1935-1939 GLYCINE PRODUCED MANY WATCHES FOR THE GERMAN ARMY. BUT BY 1940, GLYCINE HALTED DIRECT  SUPPLY TO THE GERMAN MILITARY

THESE WATCHES NORMALLY HAD A "D" OR A "D" SERIAL NO "H" STAMPED ON CASE BACK AND WERE OF THE SUB-SECOND HAND REGISTER THE DID NOT HAVE A CENTER SWEEP SECONDS HANDS. .

BY 1942, OVER 200.000 GLYCINE WATCHES WOULD MAKE THEIR WAY TO THE GERMANS BY THE ALTERATION OF THE IMPORT/EXPORT CODES WITH SUPPLIERS DIVERTING SALES TO GERMANY

MOST OF THESE GLYCINES WERE OF THE SUB REGISTER TYPE BUT SOME HAD THE NEW "SWEEP SECONDS" HAND THAT WAS MADE POPULAR DURING WWII THROUGH WATCHES LIKE THE A-11 US HACKING WATCHES.

MANY OF THESE WATCHES WERE CASED IN CHROME PLATED WIRE LUGGED CASES WITH STEEL BACKS AND HAD MAINLY BLACK DIALS.

Reichswehr 1918–1935

Following the end of World War I and the collapse of the German Empire, most of the German Army (Heer) was demobilized or simply dissolved. Many former soldiers drifted into small paramilitary groups known as Free Corps (Freikorps). The Free Corps were generally groups of 100 men or fewer that protected a neighborhood or town.

On 6 March 1919 an army known as the Provisional German Defense Force (Vorläufige Reichswehr) was formed with about 400,000 men, many drawn from the Free Corps. On 30 September that same year, the Transitional Army (Übergangsheer) was created from the Defense Force and the Free Corps.

Finally, on 1 January 1921 the 100,000 man Army of the Weimar Republic (Reichswehr) was formed with seven Infantry Divisions and three Cavalry Divisions. It was troops from the Army of the Weimar Republic who crushed Adolf Hitler's Munich Beer Hall Putsch in November 1923.

Heer 1935–1945

Under the Treaty of Versailles, the Reichswehr was only allowed 100,000 men split between the Army and the Navy. Following the 1932 German elections the Nazi Party came to power and began to abrogate the treaty. The Army was made part of the Wehrmacht in May 1935 with the passing of the "Law for the Reconstruction of the National Defense Forces". The Wehrmacht included not just the Army and Navy but also a third branch known as the Luftwaffe. Initially, the Army was expanded to divisional-sized units and smaller formations. Between 1935 and 1945 this force grew to consist of hundreds of divisions and thousands of smaller supporting units. Between 1939 and 1945 close to 16 million served in the Army. Over 3 million were killed and over 4.1 million were wounded. Of the 7,361 men awarded the initial grade of the highest German combat honor of World War II, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, 4,777 were from the Army, making up 65% of the total awarded. The Allies dissolved the German Army on 20 August 1946.

THE WATCH INDUSTRY TOOK NOTICE OF THIS FACT AND BEGAN PRODUCING AND MARKETING MILITARY DESIGNED WATCHES WHICH WERE DESIGNED AND SOLD TO SOLDIERS. JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THE 1942 ADVERT FOR GRUEN. THEY HAD EIGHT MODELS FOR DIFFERENT BRANCHES OF THE US ARMED FORCES .

***
MILITARY DESIGN
THE TEN YEAR PERIOD BETWEEN 1938 AND 1948 SAW THE UNIQUE STYLE OF MILITARY WATCHES SWEEP THE GLOBE. THE DEIGNS INCLUDED 29 TO 34 MM CASES, WITH 35 TO 40 MM CASES BEING THE RAREST, WITH SCREW ON BACKS THAT AFFORDED WATER PROTECTION AND SHOCK ABSORBERS IN 15 AND 17 JEWELED MOVEMENTS.

THE DIALS WERE ALSO REVAMPED TO WHITE OR BLACK WITH, IN SOME CASES, TWO TONE COLORS. MOST OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER HAD SWEEP SECONDS HANDS WITH OUTER CHAPTER RINGS, AND, THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER, 24 HOUR MILITARY TIME, WITH RADIUM HANDS AND RAISED RADIUM NUMERALS, AND IN MANY MODELS A RED SWEEP SECOND . [NOTE: ILLUMINATED DIALS WERE RARE FOR PILOTS]

FROM 1942 THROUGH 1945, GLYCINE PRODUCED OVER  1/2 MILLION SWEEP SECONDS HAND GLYCINE WATCHES. THE MOST RARE ARE THE LARGE 35MM STEEL CASED VERSIONS.

THOUGH COLOR PLAYED NO IMPORTANT PART, IT SEEMS THAT THE GERMAN VERSION WERE MAINLY BLACK DIALED --THOUGH WHITE VERSIONS ARE DISCOVERED-- AND THOSE PURCHASED BY AMERICAN SOLDIERS AND PILOTS WERE WHITE DIALED.

WITH RADIUM ILLUMINATED HANDS AND RADIUM ILLUMINATED RAISED NUMERALS. THE LARGE 35 MM ALL STEEL USAA VERSION WITH WHITE DIAL AND RAISED RADIUM MARKERS ARE THE HIGHEST VALUED COLLECTORS PIECES OUT SIDE OF A GERMAN BLACK SUB DIAL WITH GERMAN NAZI PARTY ENGRAVINGS.

THE AVAREAGE SIZE WAS 21MM. THE RARE 35MM MODELS WERE A SPECIAL  LIMITED EDITION DUE TO THE FACT STEEL WAS AT A PREMIUM. EVEN THE US A-11 AT 28 TO 29 MM HAD A CHROMED BASE METAL CASE.

Glycine is a Swiss wristwatch manufacturer formed in 1914  in Bienne, Switzerland by Eugène Meylan..

Meylan was an uncompromising watch engineer who strove for perfection and produced extremely precise, small movements for ladies watches. Glycine would combine these fine miniature movements with cases fabricated from gold and platinum with with diamonds. Glycine became a supplier to the wealthy.

W.W.I and the depression took a heavy toll on Glycine as Switzerland was cut off from nearly all its traditional export markets.

In 1931, Glycine developed a self-winding watch, but due to limited capitol, it was never  exploited commercially.

In 1934 Glycine introduced a chronometer line. These passed the exacting tests of the Official Swiss Quality Control. They then secured contracts with the German Government and produced watches specifically for the German pre-war reduced military--. with many going to groups that were listed UNDER various names as if they were social organizations but were actually soldiers. t

IN 1940 Glycine cut ties with the Germans, yet still produced watches for the  German Military by way of a shell game

IN 1942 through 1945, Glycine produced watches for the British Americans and Free French. . the 35 mm with raised radium dial and sweep seconds was the most sought after but rarest.

In the early 1950s, Glycine introduced the Airman model, a 24 hour watch favored by both commercial and military pilots-- including U.S. Air Force pilots during the Vietnam War.

In 1952 Glycine introduced the famous VACUUM chronometers, which were known for their incredible resistance to water and shocks.

In 1953, the AIRMAN line was presented to the world market and immediately received an enthusiastic welcome. Now, in addition to regular local time, world time was available at a glance.

The steadily growing class of jet-setters and frequent travelers readily took to the convenience of having two time zones on their wrist.

Instead of the drive train turning the dial protruding shaft/pinion at 6 position connected to the tiny second hand, they mounted a large brass/alloy wheel on the opposite side of the shaft that now protruded through the bridge. That wheel turned a wheel on top of a NEW center "shaft' held in position be a new this jeweled bridge that went through a new HOLLOW center cannon pinion in the center of the movement that then protruded through the center of the dial where a new long ***sweep second hand attached.

***sweep second hand
technically, "sweep" usually means rotating round without TICKS. In other words, smoothly rather than "ticking" by second round. In this write up, we are using sweep in a general way to better explain our history and science. It made no difference whether it was ticks or moves smooth, the idea being that one had a large second hand that went round in tune with the movement and the chapter ring so one could count, time & now even synchronize.
