In 1910, Paul Raff [ PAul RAff ] founded the [ PARA ] Raff oHG company in Pforzheim, Germany. Raff oHG began developing widely waterproof and shock-resistant watches. Many would be destined for the German Militery Goverment. Direct bombing, especially in 1945, destroyed 83% of all buildings, PARA would not produce watches again until 1949.

Paul Raff (PARA brand), along with Otto Schlund (OSCO brand), Ph. Weber (ARCTOS, PARAT brand), Wilhelm Beutter (BERG brand) Stowa (STOWA brand) would become the founding members of the [German] *PARAT alliance of Pforzheimer watch manufacturers.

Pforzheim was famous in the jewelry trade world,
Paul Raff was one of the first to set up shop

Pforzheim is a town of nearly 120,000 inhabitants in the state of Baden- Warttemberg, southwest Germany at the gate to the Black Forest. It is well-known -for its jewelry and watch-making industry. During World War II, the allies believe instruments for the German Military were being produced in the factories and works shops Pforzheim so it was bombed a number of times.

The most devastating raid was carried out by the Royal Air Force (RAF) on the evening of 23 February 1945. 26% of the town's population [over 17,000] were killed and about 83% of the town's buildings were destroyed.

Most late PARA Watches destined for the Military utilized the AS 1130/P300, the so called Wehrmacht/German Army Movement [ ALSO WAS USED IN CIVILIAN WATCHES  ] .

Another note is the fact that the PARA were built in Germany by a German Manufacturer, so the D H codes found on many WWII German Issue Military Watches were not required on the case backs. This particular watch is extremely rare, the movement predates he use of the as1130 in 1938. The date of this watch 1936-1940.

Superseding the Kaiserliche Marine of World War I,  the German titled their navy "The Kriegsmarine".  From 1935 to the defeat of Germany in 1945,   the Kriegsmarine was one of three official branches of the Wehrmacht, the armed forces of Nazi Germany.

After WWI, when GERMANY was defeated,  the Treaty of Versailles limited the size of the German war machine, including army, navy and air forces.

Beginning in 1932, the new Wehrmacht under the Command of Hit-ler, would begin to disregard the treaty and by 1935 had all but publicly dismissed it.

On the basis of the Law for the development of the armed forces of 16 March 1935 was the Navy  renamed. From the former Naval Command emerged the new High Command of the Navy (OKM). The Chief of the Navy received the new designation Commander of the Navy (OBDM).

enlist-german-wwi-navy.jpg (20457 bytes)

By January 1939, advanced military vessel construction had gone from the drawing board to production, while the Kriegsmarine would use [and test] these tools, first during the Spanish Civil War, and then, for the war effort, a Z plan was also issued .

January 1939 Z plan:

The Germans in 1936, believed that their plans for action would include the control of the Baltic Sea, winning a war against France and commerce raiding . To carry out commerce raiding in the Atlantic, ships would have to pass through the North Sea-- facing British battleships. The Kriegsmarine was tasked in 1938, with the possibility of also winning a sea war against Great Britain.

A navy of approximately 800 ships was found to be the requirement to perform the above tasks. Originally the dating was 1939 to 1948. Hit-ler changed that date to €œ1945 [dates required by Hit-ler].

The Kriegsmarine was tasked to build a strong battle fleet with submarines [U-boat] Battleships, battle cruisers , and two aircraft carriers, as well as a host of support ships. In actuality, U-boat production would be  given priority. By September 3, 1939, only two of the plan's large H class battleships and  three battle cruisers were in production.

By the beginning of  all the large ships ordered, only 1 aircraft carrier, 4 battleships, 3 heavy cruisers and 6 light cruisers which were either ready for action or would be ready in the next months. 1 additional aircraft carrier, 2 heavy cruisers and 3 light cruisers were in early of stages of construction.

With the outbreak of World War II, the need for essential war materials and materials diverted to the construction of U-boats, all work on the H class battleships, the battle cruisers, some cruisers and the two aircraft carriers were halted.

WWII WATCH OFFERED IN THIS OFFER

Though Commanders In Chief controlled the German Armed Service Commands...

WWII Commander of the Kriegsmarine/Navy

...the ultimate absolute power would be held by HIT-LER.

The top level command structure began at the Oberkommando der Marine and from there the Kriegsmarine grew rapidly during the German naval rearmament.

The most famous ships of the Kriegsmarine were U-boats, most of which were constructed before the outbreak of World War II.

THIS ALL STEEL CASED PARA BRUCHSICHER 1002 S KRIEGSMARINE WAS MANUFACTURED BY PARA, A GERMAN COMPANY THAT PROVIDED WATCHES TO THE GERMAN MILITARY OFFICERS AND THE WEHRMACHT DURING WWII

****************************

At first, German "Subs" were rapidly assembled into groups called "Wolf packs" to attack British War Vessel Activity and Convoys during the first half of the Battle of the Atlantic.

Then, as a means to disrupt and destroy American & Allied Lend Lease Convoys, German surface commerce raiders (including auxiliary cruisers) joined with U-boats to disrupt and destroy Allied shipping; millions of tons of goods, thousands of ships and many American Merchant Marines would sink into hundreds of thousands of watery graves.
