In 1910, Paul Raff [ PAul RAff ] founded the [ PARA ] Raff oHG company in Pforzheim, Germany. Raff oHG began developing widely waterproof and shock-resistant watches. Many would be destined for the German Military Government. Direct bombing, especially in 1945, destroyed 83% of all buildings, PARA would not produce watches again until 1949.

Paul Raff (PARA brand), along with Otto Schlund (OSCO brand), Ph. Weber (ARCTOS, PARAT brand), Wilhelm Beutter (BERG brand) Stowa (STOWA brand) would become the founding members of the [German] *PARAT alliance of Pforzheimer watch manufacturers.

a-watch-maker-d.jpg (16702 bytes)

Pforzheim was famous in the jewelry trade world,
Paul Raff was one of the first to set up shop

Pforzheim is a town of nearly 120,000 inhabitants in the state of Baden- Wƒ’†€™rttemberg, southwest Germany at the gate to the Black Forest. It is well-known -for its jewelry and watch-making industry. During World War II, the allies believe instruments for the German Military were being produced in the factories and works shops Pforzheim so it was bombed a number of times.

The most devastating raid was carried out by the Royal Air Force (RAF) on the evening of 23 February 1945. 26% of the town's population [over 17,000] were killed and about 83% of the town's buildings were destroyed.

Most late PARA Watches destined for the Military utilized the AS 1130/P300, the so called Wehrmacht/German Army Movement [ ALSO WAS USED IN CIVILIAN WATCHES ] .

Another note is the fact that the PARA were built in Germany by a German Manufacturer, so the D H codes found on many WWII German Issue Military Watches were not required on the case backs. This particular watch is extremely rare, the movement predates the use of the AS-1130 in 1938. The date of this watch is 1936.

PANZER III   PANZER IV    PANZER V  PANZER VI

panzer-africa.jpg (13867 bytes)

Only 4% of the defense budget was spent on the German Panzer force at the start of World War II.  Designated the "Panzer", the design began in 1935 and trials proceeded in 1937.  Development work ceased and limited production was began by Krupp in Magdeburg (Grusonwerk AG), Essen and Bochum in October 1939. Only 200 'trial' models were available for the invasion of Poland.

russian-t34.jpg (39119 bytes)

By the invasion of the Soviet Union, in Operation Barbarossa, 36 Panzer and motorized infantry divisions would take the field. Though the German Panzer forces fielded over 3000 AFV's, they were outclassed by the Soviet T-34. Yet German superiority on the field through tactical innovation and command evened the score and for the first year brought success.

ANKRA

BEFORE THE THOUGHT POLICE COME OFF THEIR FORUMS IN A RUSH TO EXPLAIN HOW MUCH THEY KNOW WHEN THEY DON'T, ALLOW ME TO REVEAL THE BEAUTY OF HISTORY AND ANKRA...

FIRST, I WILL PROVIDE A BIT OF FACT THAT I HOLD DEAR TO HEART: IT IS A NATURAL THAT PROFIT CAN BE FOUND IF ONE HAS KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY... FOR HISTORY CAN MAKE A NEW COLLECTOR SOME REAL BUCKS...

HISTORICALLY, AN "ANKRA" BRANDED TIME PIECE ONCE MEANT TOP-OF-THE-LINE. "ANKRA" WOULD SUPPLY WATCHES TO MANY OFFICERS AND ENLISTED PERSONAL IN THE WEHRMACHT, AND BY 1943, ANKRA WAS SUPPLYING THE WEHRMACHT ITSELF.

HOW THIS CAME ABOUT WAS THE FACT THAT AFTER WW1, A WATCH MAKER SAW WHAT EVERYONE ELSE DID NOT:  OPPORTUNITY IN A  COUNTRY THAT HAD NONE.

VIEWING THE HISTORY OF THE PICTURE RATHER THAN THE WIDE SPREAD NATIONAL POVERTY, IN LEIPZIG GERMANY HE FORMED A CO-OPERATIVE NAMED ANKRA DEDICATED TO SELLING IN 1925 .

A MINI WALMART IF YOU MAY-- EXCEPTING MOST GERMAN COMPANIES STILL PRODUCED HIGH GRADE -- HE SOON TOOK ON SOME OF THE BEST GERMAN AND EVENTUALLY THEN SWISS WATCHES AND SOLD THEM.

THOUGH SEARS DID IT ON A MASSIVE SCALE; PRODUCING CATALOGS AND ADVERTISING, THIS FORM OF BUSINESS WAS RATHER NEW TO EUROPE.

ANKRA BRANDED THEIR NAME AND SOLD WATCHES BY DOING WHAT THEY DID BEST, MAKING THE SALE. WATCH COMPANIES -AND OTHER PRODUCTS ALSO - NO LONGER HAD TO MARKET.

BY 1943 ANKRA AS A CO-OP BRANDED MANY TOP END WATCHES INCLUDING WATCHES FOR THE GERMAN MILITARY INCLUDING A GERMAN ARTILLERY TIMER BY LEONIDAS THAT WAS PURCHASED BY THE KRIEGSMARINE! THIS WATCH CAN BE DISCOVERED WITH LEONIDAS OR ANKRA ON IT!

IMG_8592.JPG (124072 bytes)

THE ANKRA PANZER
WWII WATCH

IN 1937 THE PANZER WAS ON ITS WAY TO HISTORICAL FAME AND THE PARA WATCH COMPANY, WITH ORDERS FOR IT'S STANDARD ROUND STYLE BRUCHSICHER   FOR THE GERMAN ARMY, STEADY FILLING ORDERS, ANKRA HAD A SCORE OF THE RECTANGULAR PARA BRUCHSICHER BRANDED.

THIS RECTANGULAR STYLE PARA WAS WORN BY MANY GERMAN OFFICERS FROM ALL BRANCHES OF THE MILITARY. IN FACT, A SPECIFIC VERSION WITH K.M. [KRIEGSMARINE] ON THE DIAL EXISTED.

SO ANKRA HAD A FEW HUNDRED OR MORE BRANDED FOR THE OFFICERS THAT WERE ASSIGNED TO THE UP AND COMING PANZER OFFICERS. THE ANKRA MODELS HAD GOLD GILDED MOVEMENTS.

THE PARA HAD RADIUM DIALS, STEEL CASES, EARLY MODELS HAD SNAP BACK AND LATER VERSIONS HAD SCREW IN CASE BACKS, EARLY SHOCK DEVICES AND 15 JEWELS COMPLETED THE PARA PLUS WATER PROOFING AND MORE...

THIS ANKRA PANZER PARA 905 BRUCHSICHER HAS A STEEL CASE, RADIUM DIAL, THE GOLD GILDED MOVEMENT AND IS WITHOUT A DOUBT, TOTALLY ORIGINAL, GENUINE AND WAS A GIFT TO A US ARMY OFFICER FROM A TANK DIVISION COMMANDER IN 1945 WHEN THE AMERICANS ADVANCED INTO GERMANY.

Erwin_Rommel.jpg (9807 bytes)

WEHRMACHT HEER

The WEHRMACHT HEER utilized WWI concepts combining ground (Heer) and Air-Force (Luftwaffe) assets into combined arms teams.

Coupled with traditional war fighting methods such as encirclements and the "battle of annihilation", the German military managed many lightning quick victories in the first year of World War II labeled by the foreign press as "Blitzkrieg".

Though the Heer had a minority of its formations motorized - 90% of the infantry moved on foot and in most circumstances artillery was horse-drawn- it was the the motorized formations that received the attention of the world's press.

The lightening success of the invasions of Poland (September 1939), Norway and Denmark (April 1940), Belgium, France and Netherlands (May 1940), Yugoslavia and Greece (April 1941) and the early campaigns in the Soviet Union (June 1941), were, in most part, the use of mechanized forces.

Germany's initial success also relied on battlefield commanders who could command their men, as well as command their tanks and airplanes like the Panzer forces in Africa under Erwin "The Desert Fox" Rommel.

PARA WAS A GERMAN COMPANY THAT PROVIDED WATCHES TO THE GERMAN WEHRMACHT DURING WWII. THIS ALL STEEL PARA BRUCHSICHER WAS PURCHASED BY   AN OFFICER IN A PANZER DIVISION.

WITH THE ANKRA / PANZER / BRUCHSICHER ON THE DIAL , ALONG WITH THE RARE, SOLID GERMAN FORGED STAINLESS STEEL CASE, BEZEL & CASE BACK, PLUS AN AWESOME GILDED AND SIGNED 15 JEWEL PARA 905  BRUCHSICHER MOVEMENT, AND THE   GERMAN STRAP WITH SPRING WIRE  FASTENER,  CARRIED WEIGHT WITH GERMAN MILITARY PERSONAL AND, SPECIFICALLY, THE OFFICERS WHO WERE FAMILIAR WITH ANKRA & PARA THROUGH EXTENSIVE ADVERTISING BY ANKRA.

 IMG_8575.JPG (152777 bytes)

THOUGH WE CLEANED THE DIAL, WE KEPT IT AS IT WAS. ROCK THOUGHT ABOUT RESTORING IT, BUT THE RARE ANKRA  AND PANZER ON THE DIAL WOULD MEAN MAKING A COSTLY [100] DIAL IMPRINT PLATE TO PRESS THE DIAL AND THEN IT MIGHT BE STATED THAT IT WAS NOT  GENUINE. SO, IN THIS CASE, PUN INTENDED, THE RARITY OF THE DIAL, WATCH AND FACTS CALL FOR ORIGINALITY.

I COULD SEE SOME  "FORUM PERSONA" WHO NEVER RESTORED A WATCH, LET ALONE ONE LIKE THIS, SAYING:

"ANKRA PANZER?" , "THERE WERE NO MILITARY ANKRA PARA PANZER WATCHES!"

BELIEVE ME, THE ESTATE THIS CAME FROM IS CLOGGED WITH RARE GENUINE TIME PIECES! LOOK BELOW!!!!!
