Tremont Watch Company, Boston, Mass- 1864/1866

.The Tremont Watch Company was founded by Aaron L. Dennison and a group of jewelers from the Boston area. Their idea was to make and assemble watches with plates made in the US and gears/wheels and other parts made in Switzerland and England. A.L. Dennison was in charge of the Swiss operations. A.L. Dennison thought that if he could produce a good movement at a reasonable price, there would be a ready market for it. Dennison went to Switzerland to find a supplier of cheap parts, as arbors were too high in America. He found a source for parts, mainly the train and escapement and the balance. About 600 sets were to be furnished.

In 1865 the first movements were ready for the market. They were 18S (basic quality), key wind, fully jeweled, and were engraved "Tremont Watch Co.". They were nicknamed the  "America's Half Breed Watch". The first  key wind watch made in gilt full plate, then 3/4 plate with 7 to 15 jewels.

By 1866 the enterprise closed.and   A.L. Dennison would set up The Dennison Watch Case Co. in England and the local USA partners would open a new company in Melrose Mass. Renamed  the "Melrose Watch Co,", the company began making another 18S with the entire train and escapement made in the US. Watches were engraved "Melrose Watch Co. Melrose, Mass." The Tremont Watch Co. was eventually sold to the English Watch Co." and Original Tremont/Melrose key wind watches are highly collectible with only 5000 to 6000 or so manufactured. The  Melrose Watch Company would endure for nearly 100 years in the form of UNIQUE wrist watches. Originating from England with swiss movements, the company became the Mellross Watch Co, Thus Wrist watch still carry the historic name with pride.   As this offer demonstrates, they are rare finds with  unique designs and solid movements.

************************************************************

Melrose is a city located in the Greater Boston metropolitan area in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Its population as per the 2010 United States Census is 26,983. It is a suburb located approximately seven miles north of Boston and is situated in the center of the triangle created by Interstates 93, 95 and US Route 1.The land that comprises Melrose was first explored in 1628 and was once part of Charlestown and then Malden. It became the Town of Melrose in 1850 and then the City of Melrose in 1900.

Melrose Massachusetts.was originally called "Ponde Fielde" for its abundance of ponds and streams or "Mystic Side" because of its location in a valley north of the Mystic River. The area was first explored by the Spragues in 1628, and became part of Charlestown in 1633. In 1649, the neighborhood of Charlestown known as Malden was incorporated as a separate town; the new town of Malden included most of present-day Melrose (then called North Malden). The name "Melrose" comes from the burgh of Melrose, Scotland in reference to the hills of Melrose, Scotland which the new town resembled.and was suggested and advocated for by William Bogle, a Scotland native and longtime resident of North Malden.

In 1845, the Boston and Maine Railroad built three stops ( commuter rail stations of Wyoming Hill, Melrose/Cedar Park, and Melrose Highlands). Boston workers in search of a country atmosphere would move to the area and commute to work. The population of North Malden began growing and by 1850 Melrose was incorporated as a town with farmland partitioned into small parcels for residences and businesses and the population of Melrose continued to grow.In 1873 a fire department and  school district were founded and a town hall built in 1873. In 1899, the City of Melrose became the 33rd incorporated city in Massachusetts. On April 1, 1982, downtown Melrose was added to the National Register of Historic Places, followed by the public library in 1988.
