I RECENTLY INVESTED IN THIS WWI, PIN-SET/NAIL-SET FLIERS  WATCH  DUE TO THE FACT I IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZED IT'S IMPORTANCE AS A WORLD WAR ONE TIME PIECE THAT WAS BEING SOLD AS A WWII GERMAN WATCH. NOW, THE CASE BACK HAS AN EAGLE WITH TALONS HOLDING THE WELL KNOWN NA-ZI SYMBOL. THIS COULD BE FROM IT'S USE IN WWII BY A GERMAN OR IT COULD HAVE BEEN ADDED TO SELL IT AS A WWII GERMAN.FLIERS WATCH. IN ANY AND EVERY CASE, IT BEGAN IT'S LIFE AS A WWI TIME PIECE.

ENGLISH PRISONERS GOING TO FORCED LABOR IN GERMANY

WWI BEGAN ON JUNE 28 1914:

A SERBIAN NATIONALIST NAMED GAVRILO PRINCIP ASSASSINATED THE ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA, FRANZ FERDINAND,, IN SARAJEVO. AUSTRIA-HUNGARY DECLARED WAR ON SERBIA A MONTH LATER. . EUROPE SOON DIVIDED INTO TWO CAMPS THE TRIPLE ALLIANCE MADE UP OF GERMANY, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY AND ITALY, AND THE TRIPLE ENTENTE OF FRANCE, RUSSIA AND GREAT BRITAIN. OTHER COUNTRIES BEGAN TO JOIN SIDES UNTIL THE TRIPLE ALLIANCE BECAME KNOWN AS THE CENTRAL POWERS AND THE TRIPLE ENTENTE BECAME THE ALLIED FORCES.

IMG_3284.JPG (140332 bytes)

A LOCAL EUROPEAN WAR SOON BECAME A GLOBAL WAR THAT LASTED FROM 1914-1918. 28 NATIONS WOULD SOON JOIN SIDES IT WAS BILLED AS THE GREAT WAR TO END ALL WARS. SOLDIERS USED EFFICIENT WEAPONS LIKE MACHINE GUNS, ARTILLERY, TANKS AND THERE WAS NOW AN  AIR FORCE. AND, BESIDES THE INNOVATIONS OF ARMS AND TACTICS, THIS WAS THE FIRST WAR THAT BEGAN IN THREE MAJOR AREAS IN EUROPE AT THE SAME TIME

THE WESTERN FRONT (FRANCE/BELGIUM),

THE EASTERN FRONT (RUSSIA)

AND THE SOUTHERN FRONT (SERBIA).

THE DEADLIEST BATTLES OCCURRED DURING WWI, INCLUDING YPRES, VIMY RIDGE, SOMME AND GALLIPOLI. ALTHOUGH THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF SOLDIERS DIED DURING THESE BATTLES, THEY WERE TURNING POINTS FOR THE ALLIED FORCES. THEY WOULD   HELP WIN WWI.

11SW1.jpg (47284 bytes)
THE FIRST USE OF THE TANK

MOST OF THE ACTION DURING WWI TOOK PLACE IN TRENCHES THAT WERE DUG DEEP INTO THE GROUND IN A ZIGZAG PATTERN TO PROTECT SOLDIERS FROM ADVANCING FORCES. BOMBING, ARTILLERY, MACHINE GUN FIRE. SOLDIERS SPENT MOST OF THE TIME IN THE TRENCH CONSTANTLY UNDER  ATTACK FROM SHELLFIRE, SNIPERS AND DISEASE. FROM TRENCH FEVER (A PAINFUL INFECTION CAUSED BY LICE FECES) TO TRENCH FOOT, WHICH CAUSED A FUNGAL FOOT INFECTION THAT COULD RESULT IN AMPUTATION, FROM  SICKNESS TO GAS ATTACKS TO LIVING IN WET MUCK AND MUD AND FECES, THE WWI TROOPER LIVED I A WORLD OF HORROR ..

NEWS AFTER A ZEPPELIN RAID OVER LONDON

THE GROUND COVERED WITH TRENCHES AND THE AIR COVERED WITH THE AIRPLANE WAS WWI. THE WAR TIME DEPLOYMENT OF FIXED WING AIRCRAFT ON A LARGE SCALE BEGAN WITH WWI. IN FACT, AT THIS TIME, WHILE THE FIXED WING AIRCRAFT WAS IN IT'S INFANCY [READ THE "FIRSTS" AT THE BOTTOM OF OFFER] "AIR CRAFT LIKE THE TETHERED OBSERVATION BALLOON  HAD BEEN EMPLOYED IN SEVERAL PREVIOUS WARS. TETHERED AIR CRAFT WAS USED FOR ARTILLERY SPOTTING AND -- IN THE CASE OF GERMANY -- THE MOBILE ZEPPELIN HAD BEEN UTILIZED FOR RECONNAISSANCE OVER THE NORTH SEA AND FOR STRATEGIC BOMBING RAIDS OVER ENGLAND.

444G_3303.jpg (25447 bytes)
GUNNERS AND BOMBARDIERS UNDER A FLYING BLIMP

THE AIRPLANE WAS JUST COMING INTO USE BY THE MILITARY WHEN WWI BROKE OUT. PILOTS AND ENGINEERS HAD TO LEARN FROM EXPERIENCE. THAT EXPERIENCE WOULD LEAD TO DEVELOPMENT   OF THE SPECIALIZED TYPES OF CRAFT; FROM RECON TO FIGHTER TO BOMBER AND EVEN GROUND ATTACK - WWI WOULD DEFINE BOTH THE CRAFT AND ITS FLIER. NOTE: THE TOP GERMAN GENERAL KLUCK REFUSED TO BELIEVE THE PLANE COULD RECON.

1122222G_3317.jpg (23656 bytes)
GERMAN RECON

GENERAL KLUCK STOOD BY HIS BELIEF IN CAVALRY WHICH WOULD COST GERMANY THE POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITY TO WIN AT THE OUTSET. FIGHTER PILOTS WOULD SOON BE PORTRAYED AS THE MODERN KNIGHT OF THE SKIES- ESPECIALLY THE FLYING ACE! THROUGH ALL OF THE MISERY, DEATH, SICKNESS AND DESTRUCTION OF WWI, THE ACE WAS THE POPULAR HERO. SOON HIGH RANKING OFFICERS WERE BEING APPOINTED TO DIRECT THE AIRFORCES. UNLIKE WWII, THE WWI AEROPLANE WOULD BECOME  MORE TACTICAL THAN STRATEGIC, USED FOR   RECON, ARTILLERY CORRECTION AND OPERATIONS COINCIDING WITH GROUND FORCES ... SETTING THE STAGE FOR THE NEXT WAR.

11WE.jpg (27282 bytes)

AIR-RECON PLAYED CRITICAL ROLES DURING 1914. IT STOPPED THE GERMANS FROM INVADING FRANCE. RECON PROVED THAT GEN KLUCK'S ARMY WAS PREPARING TO SURROUND THE BEF AND SAVED THE BRITISH FORCES. TWO OF THE MOST CRITICAL OPERATIONS OF THE ENTIRE WAR-- AND PROVED TO GEN KLUCK THAT HIS BELIEF THAT AIR-RECON WAS NONSENSE.! THROUGH AIR-RECON, THE BRITISH WOULD KNOW TO WITHDRAW TOWARDS MONS, SAVING THE LIVES OF THE BEF --100,000 MEN.

11Q2.jpg (33590 bytes)
BRITISH GUNNER SUPPORTING GROUND TROOPS & DOG FIGHTING

DURING THE FIRST BATTLE OF MARNE, AIR-RECON DISCOVERED WEAK POINTS AND THE EXPOSED FLANKS OF THE GERMANS - THIS DURING THE PERIOD THE GERMAN HIGH COMMAND STATED AIR-RECON WAS WORTHLESS-- THUS, IN THE FIRST BATTLE OF MARNE IT WAS AIR RECON THAT DISCOVERED WEAK POINTS AND EXPOSED GERMAN FLANKS.

IMG_3306.JPG (145788 bytes)
OLD WORLD CAVALRY IN WWI WAS PROVED TO BE WORTHLESS

THE GERMANS WOULD FINALLY POUR CASH INTO THE FIXED WING AIRCRAFT. AND IN THE GREAT GERMAN AIR COUP OF 1914, AT THE BATTLE OF TANNENBERG IN EAST PRUSSIA, AN UN EXPECTED RUSSIAN ATTACK WAS DISCOVERED AND REPORTED BY GERMAN AIR RECON RESULTING IN MANEUVERS THAT FORCED THE RUSSIANS TO WITHDRAW. EVEN WIT THE WITHDRAWAL OF RUSSIA, AFTER   FOUR YEARS OF  BATTLES ON OCTOBER 3, 1918, GERMANY REQUESTED A CEASE-FIRE.

IMG_3297.JPG (138705 bytes)

THE WAR ENDED ON THE 11TH HOUR OF THE 11TH DAY OF THE 11TH MONTH, WITH THE WARRING PARTIES SIGNING AN ARMISTICE AND THE AEROPLANE HAD BECOME THE AIRCRAFT/AIRPLANE AND THE FUTURE

THIS PIN SET BEAUTY OPERATES LIKE IT SHOULD. THIS INTERESTING DIAL HAS HOURS IN CENTER AND MINUTES ON OUTER CHAPTER. DURING WWI THE TIMING OF MINUTES WAS IMPORTANT. VERY FEW WATCHES HAD SWEEP SECONDS. TRENCH WATCHES THAT WERE THE LATEST HAD EASY TO READ MINUTE CHAPTERS. GOOGLE "GOLDSMITHWORKS TRENCH WATCH" TO VIEW OUR PAST RESTORES.
