1917 ADVERTISEMENT PROMOTING WALTHAM TIME AS INTERNATIONAL

FROM 1874 TO 1917,  JAPAN HAD SHED HER ANCIENT OUT-DATED WAYS AND MOVED WITH UNEXPECTED FORCE AND SPEED INTO THE MODERN WORLD.

JAPAN BECAME A BUILDER OF ARMAMENTS, SHIPS, PLANES AND HAD EVEN  IMPROVED UPON THE ADVANCEMENTS OF THE MODERNIZED WORLD.

IN FACT, AFTER THE 1904-05 ANNIHILATION OF TWO VAUNTED AND POWERFUL RUSSIAN FLEETS, SHE HAD BECOME A WELCOME TREATY PARTNER OF THE USA, BRITAIN AND THE WORLD AT LARGE. JAPAN’S STUNNING VICTORY ALSO MOTIVATED THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY.  SOON WESTERN TECHNOLOGY WAS KNOCKING AT THE DOOR TO THE MILLIONS OF JAPANSES CONSUMERS.

IN A BID TO FURTHER WHAT WAS AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY FROM A BACKWARDS TECHNOLOGY NATION OF 1875, TO A NATION THAT DESTROYED TWO RUSSIAN FLEETS IN 1905. THE JAPANESE TRAVELED THE GLOBE ABSORBING ALL THE INNOVATIONS, INCLUDING THOSE IN TIME KEEPING.

BY WWI, JAPAN, ALLIED WITH THE US, BRITAIN, FRANCE AND OTHER ALLIED WWI NATIONS AGAINST GERMANY AND HER ALLIES, BECAME A SUPPLIER OF MILITARY, SUPPORT, MEDICAL AND OTHER WAR GOODS TO HER ALLIES. AS WELL AS SUPPLYING NURSES AND DOCTORS TO THE WWI FRONT.

BY 1917,  HATTORI HAD FORMED HIS FIRST COMPANY, LATER TO BE NAMED DAINI SEIKOSHA [1937],  AND WAS ON HIS WAY GATHERING WESTERN TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE THEIR CAPABILITIES TO PRODUCE MODERN WATCHES, TIMERS, CHRONOGRAPHS AND OTHER TIMING DEVICES.

WWII-11.jpg (29742 bytes)

JAPAN  INVITED SWISS AND AMERICAN WATCH COMPANIES TO MARKET IN THE JAPANESE ISLANDS AND POSSESSIONS. IN REALITY, THEY DID WHAT THE JAPANESE DO BEST; UNDER THE BANNER OF EXPORTS, THESE COMPANIES WOULD, IN FACT, TEACH AND SUPPLY THE JAPANESE WITH BOTH CASED WATCHES AS WELL AS MOVEMENTS.

THE JAPANESE WOULD BEGIN CASING SWISS AND AMERICAN MOVEMENTS IN JAPANESE CASES AS WELL AS DESIGN MOVEMENTS THAT IMITATED THOSE THAT WERE SUPPLIED.

FROM WALTHAM TO LONGINES, THE JAPANESE WOULD INVOLVE AND EVOLVE THE DESIGNS AND PARTS.

BY THE 1950'S, POST WWII JAPAN WOULD COMPETE TOE TO TOE WITH THE ENTIRE GLOBAL WATCH COMMUNITY.. WITH THEIR OWN DESIGNS. FROM HI-BEAT TO CHRONOGRAPH AUTOMATICS TO AWESOME DIVE WATCHES, JAPAN WOULD RULE IN SALES ENTIRE MODEL/TYPE SPECIFIC MARKETS.

A FEW OF ROCKS  PAST IMPERIAL JAPANESE RESTORES

THE BEGINNINGS

JAPAN'S AGREEMENTS BACK WHEN WITH THE MOST ADVANCED WATCH COMPANIES IN THE WORLD WERE MORE THAN A FOUNDATION TO HER IMPERIAL WATCH PRODUCTION OF THE 1930'S, THEY WERE THE REASON AND CAUSE OF A FUTURE SUCCESS THAT WOULD ARISE AFTER A TOTAL DESTRUCTION.......

UNTIL THE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR, HER 1930 WATCH DESIGNS -- SOON TO BE WWII DESIGNS-- UTILIZED SWISS/AMERICAN WATCHES AND MOVEMENTS.  WHEN SHE WAS HIT WITH  MULTIPLE EMBARGOES, FROM RAW AND FINISHED GOODS TO OIL, SHE THEN RAMPED UP THE COPY-CAT PROGRAM .

THUS. DURING THE 1936 IMPERIAL PERIOD TO 1940-45 WWII PERIOD JAPANESE WATCHES  WERE PRODUCED LOOKING LIKE WESTERN WATCHES WITHOUT REFINEMENTS AND JEWELS. A COLLECTOR WILL KNOW THAT YOU DO NOT REFUSE TO INVEST IN A  JAPANESE IMPERIAL OR WWII WATCH BECAUSE IT HAS JUST A FEW JEWELS.

RARITY OF THE JAPANESE SWISS,
HYBRID, OR ALL JAPANESE WATCH

MOST JAPANESE WWII WATCHES ARE RARE DUE TO THE FACT JAPAN:

A- WAS FIRE BOMBED, ATOM BOMBED AND JAPANESE FACTORIES, WAREHOUSES AND SUPPLY BUILDINGS UTTERLY DESTROYED..

B- MOST TROOPS WEARING WATCHES IN THE FIELD, FROM CHINA TO BURMA TO KOREA TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC, WERE BOMBED AND NAPALMED IN THEIR CAVES, COMMITTED SUICIDE OR DIED IN BONZAI CHARGED FINAL BATTLES AND ATTACKS.

C- HIGH QUAILITY WRIST WATCHES AND CHRONOGRAPHS  ISSUED TO THE NAVY AND AIR FORCES WENT DOWN BY THE LITERAL HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS THROUGH SHIP AND AIRPLANE LOSES..

D- MOST WERE NON SHOCK ABSORBING OR JEWELED WHICH LED TO FAILURE AND THEN NO WAY TO REPAIR.

ONE OF THE RAREST JAPANESE MILITARY WATCHES
DESIGNED FROM A LONGINES/RECORD SWISS WATCH

SEIKO NATION IMPERIAL

SEIKOSHA WATCH COMPANY [HATTORI] FROM 1912 TO 1929 CREATED WATCHES, TIMERS, SHIPS CHRONO AND OTHERS FOR COMMERCIAL SALE AS WELL AS MILITARY PURPOSE. THE INITIAL WATCHES WERE OF BOTH FLAVORS: ALL JAPANESE BUILT FROM SWISS/AMERICAN DESIGNS, AS WELL AS CASING SWISS & AMERICAN MOVEMENTS.

THE FIRST BRANDS OR MODELS WERE NAMES LIKE SEIKO {EARLY 1920],  DELIKATA AND OTHER NAMES THAT IMPLIED EVERYDAY JAPANESE CULTURE AND  NOT OF A MILITARY NATURE.

BUT, BY  1930, THE DEPRESSION HAD WREAKED HAVOC AND THE MILITARY POWERS WITHIN THE NATION WERE POISED TO TAKE CONTROL. WHAT WAS ONCE TALK ABOUT IDEAS BECAME REALITY. THOSE SEEKING TO COLONIZE LANDS LIKE MANCHURIA, BURMA, KOREA, SOUTH PACIFIC ISLANDS AND CHINA  TO IMPROVE THE ECONOMIC NATURE OF JAPAN AS WELL AS REVIVE THE NATION FROM THE GRAIN, OIL, FOODS AND ORE OF THESE LANDS BECAME, AS IF BY NATURE, THE RIGHT THING TO DO--ESPECIALLY WHEN THE NATIONS WERE MOSTLY ASIAN AND UNDER WESTERN "WHITE MEN" COLONIAL RULE..

IN BUILDING AN EMPIRE,  THE JAPANESE, FOLLOWING THE WESTERN WORLD'S LEAD --ESPECIALLY ENGLAND, THE US AND FRANCE -- VIEWED THESE ASIAN NATIONS AS POSSIBLE COLONIES. THUS BEGAN THE NATIONAL MOVE TO THE JAPANESE MILITARY BRAND WITH THE NAME OF ITEMS PRODUCED FOR THE  CAUSE REFLECTING THAT OF NATURE......

TWO OF THE GREATEST NAMES WERE:

NATION AND IMPERIAL

[HATTORI] SEIKOSHA, FORMED IN 1937, WOULD PRODUCE WATCHES, TIMERS, FUSES, GAUGES AND  INSTRUMENTS FOR THE NAVY [INCLUDING SUBS] , AIR FORCE AND ARMY. BRANDING OR NAMING OF THE MODELS/BRANDS PRODUCED  FOLLOWED THE GOVERNMENT THEME. SUCH AS

THE "NATION" BRAND AND THE "IMPERIAL" BRANDS

SEIKOSHA ON RATCHET WHEEL
KANJI ON SWEEPS BRIDGE

1- Breguet-curved hairspring with screwed alloy rather than a steel balances provided better temperature control and less chance of breakage;

2-Shock absorbers for balances;

3- And finally, when major companies, including Omega, Longines and General watch company, began producing critical high demand center sweep second hand movements by hacking existing movements.

 CENTER SWEEP

By 1942, the sweep second hand watch had became “the” watch. Two of the major reasons were the Government issued U.S.A. A-11 hacking sweep seconds pilots watch and the sweep seconds watches in demand by Doctors, Medics and Nurses . The sweep second watch simply made the watch more than an instrument to “tell time”….

The sub-second style dial, with a tiny second hand rotating around a tiny seconds register at the 6 position, was difficult to utilize for timing events. In most cases it was ignored. On the other hand, a sweep second hand could be used to time events, mark events, and was easier to read .

  THE DESIGN

So, what did manufacturers do?   FROM 1930 THROUGH 1948 They simply placed a hollow canon pinion that allowed a wheeled center shaft to protrude through the dial, mounted a second hand to it, and ran the combo with the very sub-seconds wheel they were eliminating…

AASCOKIMG_4195.jpg (67850 bytes)

Instead of the drive train turning the dial protruding shaft/pinion at 6 position connected to the tiny second hand, they mounted a large brass/alloy wheel on the opposite side of the shaft that now protruded through the bridge. That wheel turned a wheel on top of a NEW center “shaft’ held in position be a new this jeweled bridge that went through a new HOLLOW center cannon pinion in the center of the movement that then protruded through the center of the dial where a new long ***sweep second hand attached.

***sweep second hand
technically, “sweep” usually means rotating round without TICKS. In other words, smoothly rather than “ticking” by second round. In this write up, we are using sweep in a general way to better explain our history and science. It made no difference whether it was ticks or moves smooth, the idea being that one had a large second hand that went round in tune with the movement and the chapter ring so one could count, time & now even synchronize.
