HELBROS
WWII HISTORY

ff40_3.jpg (56252 bytes)

THE HELBROS STORY
In 1913, when only the relatively well-to-do could afford a timepiece, Helbros was created by the Helbein Brothers. The middle class Swiss German watchmakers goal was to manufacture quality timepieces affordable to the working public. Throughout the 20's and 30's, Helbros became a household name and by the 40's and WWII,  Helbros was supplying watches to American Forces and a major promoter of the War Bond efforts of the United States.

WWII WOMAN IN ACTION [1917 WWI RED CROSS MILITARY WATCH]

THUS, THE SUCCESSFUL HELBROS EFFORTS FORMED THE FOUNDATION FOR TREMENDOUS SALES THAT INCLUDED A WIDE VARIETY OF USA WATCH NEEDY PROFESSIONS: FROM NURSES, MEDICS, DOCTORS, OFFICE WORKERS AND BOMBER PILOTS, TO THOSE COUNTRIES PARTICIPATING IN THE US LEND-LEASE PROGRAM, HELBROS PROVIDED THE LARGEST US SECTORS WITH WATCHES.

THESE EFFORTS WOULD NEARLY CAUSE A SCANDAL INVOLVING  HELBROS, THE GERMANS AND THE SOVIET UNION. AS DEMONSTRATED BY THE BELOW SCREEN SHOT

extract from  a book about Helbros and money "channeling" in WW2:

HELBROS, WITH THE INDUSTRIES LARGEST RADIO AND PRINT ADVERTISING  DEPARTMENTS, THEIR WASHINGTON AND CAPITOL CONTACTS AND INDUSTRY POWER, WOULD BECOME ONE OF THE LOUDEST PROMOTERS OF WAR BONDS AND STAMPS AND..

EVEN AS THE WAR WOUND DOWN, HELBROS KEPT THEIR EYES ON THE PRIZE BY CONVERTING THEIR MARKING PROGRAM BACK TO THE POPULOUS WITH THE FIRST EVER RADIO QUIZ PROGRAM!

Quick as a Flash was a 30-minute radio quiz program which featured drama segments with guest actors from radio detective shows. Created by director Richard Lewis and emcee Ken Roberts, the program debuted over the Mutual Network on Sunday, July 16, 1944. Sponsored by the Helbros Watch Company, the show was produced by Lewis and Bernard J. Prockter with scripts by Gene Wang. Music was by Ray Bloch and the Helbros Orchestra. Six contestants from the studio audience competed for cash and other prizes. Clues were presented in the form of dramatic sketches covering such subjects as current events, movies, books and historical situations. With a buzzer, a contestant could interrupt at any time to submit an answer

CROYDON

Croydon & Son, Devonport, By Appointment to the Admiralty, Actually built watches for civilian and military use. Charles Croydon is recorded working in Fore Street from 1844 until at least 1878 and then WITH his Son at 20 Fore Street circa 1890.

By WWII, Croydon Watch Company sold WATCHES produced in Switzerland . Helbros was a supplier of specialty watches. this Helbros has 17 jewel top grade movement with shock system.

The hand design had a reason and meaning and was ordered by Croydon. I can assume with confidence several reasons for such a set-up. Whether or not it actually worked for their SPECIFICATIONS, but watches like this one are the ones I live to find and restore. And, this is only one of a few I ever kept so original!

YOU MAY REQUEST A DIFFERENT STRAP
LEATHER SKIN HIDE NYLON STEEL PVD

PRICING WILL BE LESS COST OF THIS STRAP
OR
THE OPPOSITE IF LESS

IMG_7027.JPG (128818 bytes)

NOTE THE HANDS... ARE ORIGINAL

YES, I KNOW, THE MINUTE HAND LOOKS  COOL BUT WEIRD!

IMG_7020.JPG (162871 bytes)

THIS WATCH IS A HELBROS CUSTOM ORDERED BY CROYDON
CROYDON WAS  AN  ENGLISH WATCH COMPANY
"By Appointment to the Admiralty"
THEY ALSO SOLD WATCHES
TO THOSE IN THE BRITISH ARMED FORCES
IMG_7030.JPG (147250 bytes)

THE MINUTE HAND IS AWESOME
WITH RADIUM USED ON
NUMBERS & HANDS

ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT

IMG_7028.JPG (141064 bytes)

WE HAVE RESTORED A FEW HUNDRED HELBROS AND THREE [COUNTING THIS ONE] WERE CROYDON HELBROS WATCHES ALL MADE AT THE SAME TIME AND ALL WITH THE SAME MINUTE AND SECOND HAND

NOTE HOW EASY IT IS TO READ
THE ARROW POINTED PROVIDES LOOKS AS WELL AS EASE OF USE

NORMALLY WE HAVE TO RESTORE THE DIAL
WHEN WE REMOVE OLD RADIUM

IMG_7027.JPG (128818 bytes)

BUT RARITY AND CONDITION DICTATED
A LIGHT RESTORE OF ILLUMINATION
USING AF LUMINOVA
A PHOSPHORUS/ZINC COMBINATION
NOTE NO GLARE OR SHINE ON CASE.
A MILITARY CASE FINISH.
AND,  A STUNNING STRAP.

THE MINUTE HAND ORIGINALLY WAS  BLACK
AT FIRST WE LEFT IT AS IS WITH PAINT MISSING
COPPER WITH RED
THE RADIUM LONG FLAKED OFF
BUT WE DECIDED TO PAINT IT AS IT WAS
AND ILLUMINATE THE TIP

IMG_7017.JPG (153378 bytes)

DIAL HAS LIGHT EVEN PATINA
I SEE SOME OFFERS WITH STAINED DIALS
BEING STATED AS "PATINA"

THIS BEAUTY HAS A GENUINE AGED PATINA DIAL

IMG_7031.JPG (141101 bytes)

I WILL START WITH RE-ILLUMINATION,WE HARDLY EVER RE-ILLUMINATE W/O REMOVING EVERYTHING.- BUT THIS TIME PIECE IS WORTH SO MUCH MORE IN ORIGINAL CONDITION REGARDLESS OF WEAR OR AGE.  SO ROCK TOOK THE TIME TO ILLUMINATE THE NUMERALS WHILE MAINTAINING THE OUTLINES. WE ARE ALL HAPPY IT CAME OUT GREAT

IMG_7008.JPG (167204 bytes)

WE HAVE NEARLY 4 THOUSAND SETS OF HANDS INCLUDING OVER 400 SETS OF ORIGINAL 1930 TO 1950 BLACK STEEL MILITARY HANDS WITH WINDOWS [ILLUMINATION] LIKE THE ABOVE HOUR HAND. IF THE HAND WAS AMISS, WE WOULD SIMPLY PULL A .85 MM HAND,  RE-ILLUMINATE AND PLACE IT ON THE WATCH

HERE SHE IS BEFORE RE-ILLUMINATION. THE STRAP IS WWII BUT IS A SMALL SIZE DUE TO SHRINKAGE. SO IT IS NOT ON THE WATCH NOR IS IT PART OF OFFER.

IMG_5334.JPG (128849 bytes)

ANOTHER SHOT TAKEN WITH NO PROPS OR LENSES JUST PLAIN PICTURE IN FULL LIGHT. THINK, 1930 TO 1940!.

ONE ITEM, RADIUM PAINTS ON. IT WAS RADIOACTIVE. IT GLOWED 24/7. THE LUMINOVA IS AWESOME, BUT IT HAS TO BE CHARGED BY LIGHT, THE OTHER ITEM IS WHEN PAINTED ON, RATHER THAN IN A "WINDOW" , IT GOES ON SLIGHTLY BUMPY

IMG_7012.JPG (149752 bytes)

CASE HAD AN ANTI GLARE FINISH
IT REMAINS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION

IMG_7005.JPG (172097 bytes)

THIS STRAP COLOR IS 1940 STYLE

IMG_7004.JPG (176432 bytes)

REMEMBER YOU CAN ASK FOR BLACK OR BROWN NO ADDITIONAL COST

IMG_7015.JPG (100999 bytes)

THIS ORIGINAL DIAL IS SUPER NICE. PERFECT PATINA, OUTER NUMBERED TRIPLE SWEEPS CHAPTERS ARE BOLD. A PERFECT  AGED WITH GRACE PATINA DIAL SIGNED CROYDON , SHOCK PROOF & SWISS. WHICH DEMONSTRATES THAT HELBROS MADE THIS WATCH FOR CROYDON AND THE ONCE FAMOUS ENGLISH MARKET IN WWII.

IMG_7023.JPG (151554 bytes)

AWESOME STRAP

YOU MAY REQUEST A DIFFERENT STRAP
NATO STYLE WOULD LOOK GREAT

IMG_7022.JPG (135935 bytes)
