WATCHES WERE MADE AND SOLD DIRECTLY TO TROOPS
ALSO THE USE OF RADIUM HAD COME OF AGE

 WWI

THE GREAT WAR
World War I (W.W.I) or First World War (called at the time the Great War) was a major war centered on Europe that began in the summer of 1914. The fighting ended in November 1918. This conflict involved all of the world's great powers assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (centered around the Triple Entente) and the Central Powers. More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilized in one of the largest wars in history. More than 9 million combatants were killed, due largely to great technological advances in firepower without corresponding advances in mobility. It was the second deadliest conflict in Western history.

TRENCH WARFARE
Trench warfare is where combatants occupy fighting lines consisting of fortified trenches. Trenches provided protection from small arms fire and, in most conditions, sheltered soldiers from artillery. Elaborate trenches and dugout systems were built by all sides and these were from assault by barbed wire. Though trenches were built to protect soldiers, life in the trench, with mud, rats, human waste and casualties, gas attacked and sustained artillery, was sheer hell.

THE TRENCH WATCH
The Trench watch or wristlet was a type of watch that came into use by the military during World War I, as pocket watches were not practical in combat. The trench watch had to be rugged. Yet many trench watches were actually pocket watch conversions, with most having a clam shell back and snap on bezel. SHIELDS or SHRAPNEL GUARDS were introduced to protect the crystal of watches from damage due to life in a trench and not from artillery. It protected  the crystal from accidental breakage.

SERIOUS BUFFING AT HIGH HEAT & PRESSURE IS REQUIRED TO RESTORE
WATCH  CASES. THIS RIGOROUS PROCESS INCLUDES THE USE OF SEVERAL TYPES OF
ROUGE . ONE HAS TO "FEEL" THE PIECE TO GET IT RIGHT. THAT MEANS USING MY HANDS. WHEN YOU COMBINE THE EXTREME TEMPERATURES AND THE ROUGE,
THE DEPOSITS ON MY HANDS ARE SEMI-PERMANENT.  IT TAKES DAYS TO GET THE ROUGE OUT OF MY HANDS. SO, IF THE PICS OF MY HANDS LOOK "DIRTY", KNOW IT IS DUE TO THE MY HANDS ABSORBING WHAT YOU DO NOT WANT ON YOUR AWESOME RESTORED TIME PIECE!  HAVE A GREAT DAY!.

WHAT IT TAKES!

IMG_4819.JPG (37230 bytes)

AFTER TEARING DOWN THE WATCH
WE SET OUT TO FIND THE CAUSE OF A PROBLEM
AFTER SPENDING A WEEK RESTORING THE MOVEMENT

IMG_4821.JPG (33263 bytes)

WE REALIZED THAT THE NEW MAIN SPRING WAS BINDING IN THE BARREL
THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE ARE NO MAIN SPRINGS TO BE HAD
THAT IS --MAIN SPRINGS FOR TRENCH WATCHES
MOST TRENCH WATCHES REQUIRE ADAPTED CUSTOM MAIN SPRINGS
YOU HAVE TO FIND ONE CLOSE AND CUSTOMIZE IT

THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THIS TRENCH WATCH SPRING BARREL EXPANDED
DUE TO THE NEW MAIN SPRING.

THE SPRING WE SELECTED WORKED PERFECTLY
BUT  A BULGE DEVELOPING FROM AN EXISTING
MICROSCOPIC FLAW IN THE BARREL. PRETTY SIMPLE.

ONCE IT EXPANDED JUST A SMALL AMOUNT
THE GEAR/TINES ABOVE  PUSHED AGAINST THE
CENTER WHEEL AND IT STOPPED THE WATCH.

AAAAAAAAAMG_6158.jpg (29575 bytes)

IMG_4816.JPG (48547 bytes)

IT TOOK SEVERAL WEEKS & 165.00
TO FIND SEVERAL NON-RUNNING TRENCH WATCHES WITH
THE SAME MOVEMENT FOR THE CORRECT BARREL

AS WELL AS PARTS FOR THE FUTURE IN CASE WARRANTY
WORK IS EVER REQUIRED. THE EXTRA PARTS WILL BE
STORED IN THE CASE OUR PATRON REQUIRES
WARRANTY WORK IN THE FUTURE

IMG_4823.JPG (40286 bytes)

SO NOW WE HAD TWO COMPLETE  STORAGE MOVEMENTS
ONE WOULD SUPPLY THE BARREL

IMG_4824.JPG (45004 bytes)

WE  DISASSEMBLED BOTH WATCH MOVEMENTS
[PARTS. PARTS. PARTS]

IMG_4820.JPG (38346 bytes)

THIS  VERSION IS IDENTICAL .
NOTICE THE "AS"MOVEMENT MANUFACTURE HALLMARK

IMG_4814.JPG (54377 bytes)

CLEAN AND READY TO GRAB THE MAIN SPRING BARREL
WE STILL HAVE TO FIND  THE MAIN SPRING
THE MAIN SPRING IS BAD IN THIS

IMG_4825.JPG (46710 bytes)

HERE WE HAVE CHANGED BARRELS OUT,
WE THEN REPAIRED THE FIRST BARREL
THE REPAIRED BARREL WAS PLACED IN THE RIGHT
THE NEW ORIGINAL BARREL PLACED IN THE ONE AT LEFT

IMG_4827.JPG (46213 bytes)

BOTH WERE KEEPING TIME BUT WE DECIDED
TO USE THE REPAIRED BARREL IN THE FUTURE PARTS WATCH
