DOES A WATCH HAVE TO BE GOVERMENT ISSUED TO BE STATED AS  MILITARY?

THOUGH THERE ARE DIE-HARDS THAT BELIEVE ONLY WATCHES LIKE THE A-11 HACKING WATCH ARE MILITARY, THE FACT IS, BETTER WATCHES WERE MADE FOR DIRECT SALE TO MILITARY MEMBERS, NURSES, DOCTORS AND DEFENSE PERSONAL. AND, LIKE THE 1960' ZODIAC SEA WOLF, MANY WOULD BECOME FAMOUS TO THE TROOPERS WHO WORE THEM.

THERE WERE LITERALLY MILLIONS OF SOLDIERS DURING WWI WWII, VIETNAM AND OTHER WARS, BATTLES, CONFLICTS. ONLY A FRACTION OF THE WATCHES WORN BY TROOPS WERE PROVIDED BY THE MILITARY. MILITARY ISSUED WATCHES HARDLY EVER WERE OFFERED TO "GRUNTS".

THE WATCH INDUSTRY WERE AWARE OF THIS FACT AND PRODUCED AND MARKETED MILLIONS OF WATCHES THAT WERE "MILITARY DESIGNED". WATCHES WHICH WERE DESIGNED AND SOLD TO SOLDIERS.

JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THE BELOW 1918 AND 1942 ADVERTS FOR GRUEN. IN WWII THEY HAD EIGHT MODELS FOR DIFFERENT BRANCHES OF THE US ARMED FORCES & DEFENSE ORGANIZATIONS. AND, AS I STATED, MANY WERE MADE BETTER FROM CASE MATERIAL TO DESIGN AND MOVEMENT, LIKE THE GYCINES AND UNIVERSAL GENEVA, ALPINA, PAGE, LANCO, EMPIRE, OH.. HECK.. YOU GET THE DRIFT.

GRUEN-MILITARY-WATCH-222222.jpg (136309 bytes)

IN 1941 THEY OFFERED A SERIES OF WATCHES FOR 8 SEPERATE DEFENSE SERVICES, FROM THE FLYER, NAVY PERSONAL, MARINES AND ARMY TO THE   AMERICAN LEGION , STATE GUARD, WOMAN FLYER AND MEDICAL CORPS NURSE, THEY HAD ALL BASES COVERED. NOE THESE WERE NOT CHEAP WATCHES NOR WERE THEY GOVERNMENT SPEC, THEY WERE AT LEAST TWICE THE SOPHISTICATION THAN THE VERY MILITARY WATCHES THEY AND OTHERS MADE.

Gruen-military-WATCH2222.jpg (173152 bytes)

IN WWI THEY SOLD SPECIALLY MAD WATCHES TO OFFICERS AND EMNLISTED PERSONAL.

MILITARY DESIGN
THE TEN YEAR PERIOD BETWEEN 1938 AND 1948 SAW THE UNIQUE STYLE OF MILITARY WATCHES SWEEP THE GLOBE. THE DEIGNS INCLUDED 29 TO 34 MM CASES, SCREW ON BACKS AND UNIQUE SNAP TWIST BACKS  THAT AFFORDED SOME WATER PROTECTION, SHOCK ABSORBERS IN 15 AND 17 JEWELED MOVEMENTS. THE DIALS WERE ALSO REVAMPED TO WHITE OR BLACK WITH, IN SOME CASES, TWO TONE COLORS. THEY HAD OUTLINED RAISED RADIUM NUMBERS, 24HR MILITARY MARKERS, AND MOST HAD SWEEP SECONDS WITH OUTER CHAPTER RINGS AND LUMED HANDS AND IN MANY MODELS A RED OR CONTRASTING COLOR SWEEP SECOND HAND.

HOW ABOUT ANOTHER  BEAUTIFUL WWII ERA WRIST WATCH. THIS BEAUTY WAS MADE BY THE LANGENDORF [LAN] WATCH COMPANY [CO]. IT'S AWESOME SIZE AND LOOK WITH WONDERFUL BLACK DIAL, OUTLINED RAISED ILLUMINATED NUMERALS AND WHITE MILITARY TIME IS SIGNED LANCO & SWISS MADE ON THE DIAL AND MOVEMENT.

LANCO STANDS FOR "Langendorf" [Watch] "Company" .   Langendorf was a Swiss watchmaker in Langendorf, Switzerland known for its fine craftsmanship and great attention to detail in 1890. Langendorf produced watches and parts that were sold under many brand names such as Aliada, Barracuda, Carex, Cavalier, Lancet, Stratford and Valogene.

IMG_0333.jpg (159120 bytes)

"LANCO" WWII watches are usually first class. Our research and investment in fine but worn out examples demonstrate their owners utilized their Lanco watches; they did not throw them in a drawer!  This Lanco is an early Military Watch with the standard wire lugged three piece case. It sports a black 24 hour Radium dial, sub second register  and awesome diamond shaped insert black steel hands.

I have restored decades of watches that others throw away. With thousands under the belt, these DIAMOND hands are the first i have ever encountered; they demonstrate the beauty of this early Langendorf.
