PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU WEAR WIND OR SET THE DATE ON YOUR NEWLY RESTORED VINTAGE
TIME PIECE
CARING FOR YOUR VINTAGE WATCH
1) SETTING DAY OR DATE:
"QUICK SET": PULLING CROWN TO FIRST POSITION CLOCK WISE AND
COUNTER CLOCKWISE. SETS DAY AND DATE. SOME SEIKO HAVE A PUSH-IN SETTING SYSTEM
MANUAL SET: TURNING CLOCK WISE UNTIL DATE CHANGES, REPEAT
MANUAL SET 2: SET BY TURNING CLOCKWISE FROM 20 (8) TO 24 (12) HOUR.
YOU TURN THE HANDS CLOCKWISE UNTIL DATE CHANGES, THEN GO BACK TO 20 HOUR (8) AND THEN
CLOCKWISE TO 24 HOUR (12). YOU REPEAT THIS UNTIL DATE IS APPROPRIATE.
2) NEVER WIND YOUR WATCH TO MAXIMUM SPRING TENSION:
By twisting the watches crown with the thumb and forefinger in a clockwise fashion.you
wind your watches mainspring. The crown will spin both directions yet will
only wind one direction. NEVER wind a vintage watch to its maximum position. Rather, when
you receive your manual wind watch, gently wind the CROWN back and forth between thumb and
forefinger maybe TEN TIMES. Then WEAR IT. As you do this you will know how
much to wind it to suit your needs. You want TO LEARN YOUR WATCH. My experience has taught
me that if you wind it and wear it and get used to occasionally winding it during the day,
the watch will operate for a long time before servicing is required again.
3) PULLING CROWN
PLEASE PULL CROWNS GENTLY WHEN SETTING TIME/DATE. Do NOT PULL IT
OUT! Grasp Crown Between THUMB AND FOREFINGER NAILS and LEVER IT OUT IN ONE
MOTION..
4 ) TURNING WHEELS IN ONE DIRECTION
WHEN EVER POSSIBLE SET TIME IN CLOCK-WISE MOTION ONLY. TRY NOT TO SET VINTAGE
WATCHES COUNTER (REVERSE) CLOCKWISE UNLESS IT IS FOR SETTING DATE .
5) AUTOMATIC WINDING
FULL AUTOMATICS MUST BE MOVED UP AND DOWN COUNTING AT LEAST 30 TIMES PER DOUBLE
MOVEMENT BEFORE WEARING.
6) STORING WATCH
PLACE WATCH WITH FACE UP IF POSSIBLE WHEN STORING OR NOT WEARING. NEVER PLACE
YOUR WATCH ON ITS SIDE.
7) WATER RESISTANCE
DO NOT SWIM OR TAKE SHOWER WITH YOUR WATCH ON UNLESS IT HAS A SCREW DOWN
CROWN AND HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR WATER USE BY GSW. MANY DIVE WATCHES HAVE
NON-SCREW DOWN CROWNS. REPLACING SEALS DOES NOT NECESSARILY MAKE UP FOR CASE AND STEM TUBE
WEAR. NOT ALL STEM TUBES ARE AVAILABLE FOR VINTAGE WATCHES.
8) YOUR CAR
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VINTAGE TIME PIECE IN A VEHICLE-- EXTREME TEMPERATURES CAN
HARM THE WATCH.
9) COSMETICS:
DO NOT USE CHEMICALS, CLEANERS or JEWELRY BUFFING CLOTHS. USE A DAMP SOFT COTTON CLOTH to
clean your vintage watch. Paying extra attention to cleaning the underside case back
also.
10) DO NOT WEAR YOUR VINTAGE TIME PIECE while working with tools such as hammers
or vibrating tools. KEEP YOUR WATCH away from magnetic devises and fields, even if it
states ANTIMAGNETIC.
11) CRYSTAL CARE:
MINERAL GLASS :: cannot be buffed out. can scratch, the most toughest of all crystals .
SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL: cannot be buffed out. is clearer than any other crystal, but shatters
easy,
HARDLEX/COATED : cannot be buffed out. can scratch, scratches less than straight mineral
glass crystals .
PLASTIC: though this is the least appreciated crystal, it is the best due to the fact that
SCRATCHES CAN BE BUFFED OUT, If you scratch it, any local jeweler should be able to buff
out in a few minutes.
12) TWO OR MORE CROWNS:
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. WHEN YOU HAVE TWO OR MORE CROWNS, AND ONE IS FOR TURNING AN INNER
CHAPTER RING, SUCH AS RADO CAPTAIN HOOK, VELESSA AND OTHERS, NEVER ATTEMPT TO PULL
THAT CROWN OUT.
